Forums - Sales Discussion - Xbox 360 Vs. Playstation 3 2012 - *February* Update

Well the PS3 boost in Japan was about 20K not the 40K to 80K I saw predicted.

Expect a nice price cut just before Black Friday. Microsoft is just waiting for MW3 bundles to go through their 2 weeks of sales and then BAM, $50 price cut across the boards.

I really doubt that will happen. What's more likely is a hard drive upgrade (4GB -> 12GB, 250GB -> 320GB)

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=4290599

still not sure what MS planning

MS does have 15 million planned for it's fiscal year ending June 2012 (Sony also has 15 million planned for it's fiscal year, but that ends March 2012). Anything can happen, but MS does not have to do anything this fall to make that 15 million. I'm thinking they might do retail sales (like $50 off at every major retailer) to bring up hype and sales, and then properly cut the price next fall.

And you believe that a price cut would push the sales of x360 significantly?

It would have if Microsoft had announced it before Black Friday. Not sure what Microsoft is thinking, but they will most likely end up 2nd again this year unless the Wii performs some kind of miracle. There are a lot of nice bundles, but all 3 platforms have decent bundles out right now.

Had a thought tonight, if MS do what I think is a possibility at this stage, it would be fucking genius and slaughtering. I'm not going to say what (although I have told some people to back me up to say I did say it before it happened )

If they don't do it, I'll tell ya'll in January.

You:

Xbox360 250GB ist now 199€ (-50€) amazon.de and £189 (-17£) on amazon.co.uk. And has some nice deals too:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_162029467_9?ie=UTF8&docId=1000598623&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=right-6&pf_rd_r=1J1GNRAYS00VXZMTZSBW&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=265334167&pf_rd_i=350613011

If MS keeps this up they might catch up to PS3...

edit: looks like the new cheaper 250GB modell ist matte, not glossy. the glossy 250GB still at 250€.

Yo Kowen what happened to your "360 best year in 6th year" thread haven't seen that one in a while esp. considering the last 3weeks of sales.

I was waiting for the revival of this thread. I'm guessing Seece will update the OP when the actual numbers are posted this week.

I LOVE paying for Xbox Live! I also love that my love for it pisses off so many people.

Well it looks like after BF week that the difference could be right about 1 million with 5 big weeks left. Also remember the truly big weeks in Japan are after January 1st and Japan is trending down YoY. This week PS3 was down about 50% compared to last year.

Averaging a 200K per week lead is possible, but will be interesting to see what MS does marketing wise to see it happen. This week and next week don't seem to have the special deals like were going on the weeks leading up to BF week and including BF week for the 360. It also seems that Sony only put out a limited amount of the PS3 holiday bundles and they are no longer selling them. I suspect MS will be ramping up the special deals with a blow out week before Christmas planned. I expect that week to see a lot of $100 gift card offers. What about Europe thought what is happening over there?

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

So pulled up Excel and did some calculation starting BF week through Christmas Eve.

Basic assumptions

  • PS3 NA Up YoY 20% each week except Christmas week because of extra day this year I boosted 30%
  • 360 NA Flat week after BF week. Then up YoY 20% each week due to shortages last year. Up 30% Christmas week
  • PS3 Europe up 15% BF week WoW (Down YoY because GT5 launched last year)
  • PS3 Europe then down 20% YoY following week then proceeds to grow 15% each week through Christmas Eve
  • 360 Europe up 7.5% BF week WoW
  • 360 Europe then up 15% WoW through Christmas Eve
  • PS3 Japan at 40K this week then increase 30% WoW through Christmas Eve
  • 360 Japan at 1700 this week then increase 20% WoW through Christmas Eve

With this I get the 360 outselling PS3 by about 1.4M starting BF week through Christmas Eve. That leaves the week b4 New Years to settle the score.  It will be tight. Last year 360 dropped 60% that week as 360 was in very short supply and PS3 dropped giving the PS3 the week by 120K.  I suspect that going into the last couple of weeks MS is going to drop some awesome deals for 360s to claim WW #1.
