Forums - Sales Discussion - Xbox 360 Vs. Playstation 3 2012 - *February* Update

yes cod is bigger in america which is the xbox's strongest area but have you seen these sales the past few weeks emeaa > america total sales so i wouldn't count out emeaa having a bigger hand in these totals and remember cod is becomming more popular on the ps3 and the difference between the sales of both versions are becomming smaller i expect mw3 to only be around 1.6m ahead of the ps3 version this time around.

but you cannot think that cod will be enough to help xbox win! especially with coloured silver and white limited edition consoles all over emeaa and Uncharted 3 and Final fantasy? and i doubt a multiplatform game that only outsells the ps3 version by 2m is going to be enough, although if they had have released the star wars console even though it cost so much, xbox would have smashed it in

Holidays haven't started, that's why EMEAA is still combined above Americas. That will change as soon as MW3 releases.

MW3, per console sold, is actually becoming even more popular on 360 then PS3, so any boost PS3 gets from the game will still be offset by the larger boost the 360 gets. Sale between games are getting smaller because the difference in hardware is geting smaller compared to the total number of systems, but the 360 version will always be better selling.

Oh those coloured PS3's are releasing outside of Japan?

360 has Forza, Gears, Halo, and Kinect to drive sales this fall, and americas region sales are most affected by holiday sales. So yes I think 360 will beat PS3 in the next 9 weeks, but not by too much IMHO. UC3, Colours and FFXIII-2 release in Japan won't be enough to offset the normally higher sales of 360 in the coming months, MW3, Black Friday, and 1 more Halo.

Since were reviewing, here's a bigger picture

Period PS3 Xbox360 Lead (PS3) Lead (X360)
Jan 3rd 2010 - Oct 30th 2010 8,888,835 7,301,151 1,587,684
Oct 31st 2010 - Jan 1 2011 5,502,536 6,305,487   802,951

Total 2010 14,391,371 13,606,638 784,733

Jan 2nd 2011 - Oct 29th 2011 8,778,992 7,242,745 1,536,247

Notice the similarities? History may very well repeat itself

WHOAH!!!!!

However 360 doesn't has as much of a Q4 edge as it did last year. The only reason it's even on par with 2010 numbers is because of a stronger Q1 and Q2, but since X360 Slim debut, 360 has been selling less on equivalent weeks.

As for Sony, they have a slightly bigger edge as they did a price cut.

Wonder if it will be a 5th year peak for PS3 as well, heck maybe a 6th year peak for 360... Crazy.

i disaree lol. i'm board don't mind me.

Microsoft always have stronger holiday, but nah they wont sell 1.3 million more in the holiday than PS3, especially when the PS3 had a price drop recently. I do not think M$ will drop price (this year), when they are selling so well, they are in it for the money not just to "win".

Its amazing how this gen has 3 relatively successful consoles!

And aside from the wii, both ps3 and 360 are possibly in their peak years!!! year 5 and 6 respectively. Thats insane. Also both will have a strong year next year with slight declines...(hell if both do further price cuts they could both be close to this years numbers again maybe even equal?!).

Depending on how long MS support the 360, we now sony will support ps3, both systems are looking at really high LT sales. Sales i didnt think was possible especially with the disastrous ps3 launch.

The longevity of this gen is gonna be a great plus to us gamers as well. Not much games announced for next year, so hopefully we wont be seeing the endless stream of sequels as we have this year...and we might get some really creative, innovative games coming.

Why was the claim made that PS3 already basically confirmed to lead ending 11/5?

ummm... because M$ said so?... on numerous occations even?

Huh. MS said that the PS3 outsold the 360 the week ending 11/5?  Where?

Or is it as someone else said because it was Uncharted 3 release week?  Really just that assumption even though VGC says that Uncharted 3 just sold 550K initial release week in November. Totally ignoring all the 360 deals this week including multiple deals for $100 gift cards.

that was just Americas, not worldwide

The longevity of this gen makes owning 2 consoles worthwhile. This gen really has been different from prior ones.

That's not true at all.  In the year 2007, the PS3 outsold the 360 by ~232K for the months of Nov and Dec.  In 2009, the PS3 outsold the 360 by a whopping ~1.5 mil for those same months.  Each of those years saw a price cut to the PS3.  I think we are going to see history repeat itself this year.

2007 saw the first holiday sales of the PS3 in Europe i think - PS3 outsold 360 during the holiday season

2008 nothing special with the PS3 chuging along at a very high price - X360 outsold PS3 during the holiday season

2009 slim released in september plus a price cut - PS3 outsold X360 during the holiday season

2010 x360 slim released midyear and kinect and move released holiday season - X360 outsold PS3 during the holiday season

2011 - ??? we shall see

A bit difficult Seece , especially since the latest announcements of both companies. Sony will probably be above next quarter...

If MS does price cut then it might come out on top. If they don't Sony will likely win.
