@BH Of course Sony would use the money hat... Umm, they're a business. But they are not the ones bribing studio's with 50mil. I think that speaks in volumes how studio's are supporting Blu ray for Blu ray as opposed to being brought.

the way Toshiba and MS have gone about this format war is backfiring on them and so it should. Damn Transformers was meant to be on Blu Ray... It will in 2 yrs :P

Liar. It's that none have been reported as widely.

You got me!!! :P Don't tell anyone else I'm full of shit.  Ok LordKnightofnothingness :P

  Unleash The Beast!

End of 2011 Sales: Wii = 90mil, 360 = 61mil, PS3= 60mil

Well it was bound to happen, Microsoft had to actually pay their way for good HD DVD sales while sony just watched Blu Ray go successful.

Toshiba Comments on Blu-ray Announcement from Warner Bros

What's New

FIRST ONLINE Jan 4, 2008

TOKYO, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba is quite surprised by Warner Bros.' decision to abandon HD DVD in favor of Blu-ray, despite the fact that there are various contracts in place between our companies concerning the support of HD DVD. As central members of the DVD Forum, we have long maintained a close partnership with Warner Bros. We worked closely together to help standardize the first-generation DVD format as well as to define and shape HD DVD as its next-generation successor.

We were particularly disappointed that this decision was made in spite of the significant momentum HD DVD has gained in the US market as well as other regions in 2007. HD DVD players and PCs have outsold Blu-ray in the US market in 2007.

We will assess the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluate potential next steps. We remain firm in our belief that HD DVD is the format best suited to the wants and needs of the consumer.

I smell a lawsuit. If there were not agreements, Warner would be perfectly justified, but if there are actual contracts...

This would certainly get ugly.

I went into Harvey Norman - which is a superstore in Aust. They are only selling HD DVD movies and Players as well as Blu ray players but no BD movies. They have flyer's on all their LCD/Plasma tv's which have HD DVD as their main format.

Then a store person was trying to sell me a HD DVD player and I declined. Then offered duel players. I said nah, just BD for me, plus Blu Ray is winning anyways so I'll stay Blu Ray. The guy laughed and got all serious. HD DVD is winning, Even to the point of saying that Sony Execs have foreseen Blu Ray losing and that they are preparing a HD DVD format or firmware to keep the ps3 alive.

Now if that isn't the biggest crock of shit I have ever heard I just might be an xbox fan

And WTF with HD-DVD burners?? you can't even find one in a store, it's like they made a couple of "show only" versions 2 years ago and no company (besides toshiba) gave a crap to make another one after that. That's something this "war" is holding up too. It's about time all computers come equipped with hi def video rom drives, and burners start to sell more and blank media. Hey, look at Dual-layer dvd media, its prices should be on the floor like ages ago, but no!

I root for the best format! 50 GB storage capacity all the way!

But HD DVD movies can be released on 50gb disc now? :P The advantage that bluray had in that department is now obsolete.

I doubt that pcs will become equipped with either HD DVD or Bluray drives for a very long time either... Manufacturers want to make their pcs a cheap as possible, and they do that by putting a DVD drive on their pcs. Why up the price of a pc by a good few hundred quid with no real demand or need at this moment in time.

I personally think that both of these products are ahead of themselves... they are trying to break into dvds market while dvds are still selling like hot cakes, and are selling more and more all the time.

This is a very big deal for the format wars, and a moderately big deal for the console wars.

If and when this begins to have an effect on Blu Ray adoption, I expect 1-2% of people who would have otherwise bought a 360 to buy a PS3 instead.

If it becomes necessary (which is now likely), it won't be long before MS releases a Blu-ray add-on drive for the 360.  They've mentioned before that it wouldn't be difficult for them to do.

I own both HD formats and a similar amount of films on both, and this news makes me sad.  I really do prefer the HD-DVD format for a number of reasons, and I think that it offered the best future for physical HD media.  This announcement will likely come to be seen as the death knell for HD-DVD, barring any substantial craziness yet to occur, and I think that is unfortunate.  I will miss the format if it dies off completely.

You don't buy your wat to good sales. And NEITHER format has good sales. The best releases for both sides sell less than 2% of their DVD counterparts.

Yet by your logic, Sony did the same, as they sold the PS3 for huge losses at first.

Since when has either of the formats been successful? I havent seen any profits yet, and i doubt that we will for a very very long time.

We should start a petition for The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Blu-Ray.

There are strong rumors that it will be released in 2008, and probably announced at CES this weekend. :D

Warner was questioned about LotR at last years CES, and they said it was "in the works" or something like that.

@tk
