This is a very big deal for the format wars, and a moderately big deal for the console wars.

If and when this begins to have an effect on Blu Ray adoption, I expect 1-2% of people who would have otherwise bought a 360 to buy a PS3 instead.

If it becomes necessary (which is now likely), it won't be long before MS releases a Blu-ray add-on drive for the 360.  They've mentioned before that it wouldn't be difficult for them to do.

I own both HD formats and a similar amount of films on both, and this news makes me sad.  I really do prefer the HD-DVD format for a number of reasons, and I think that it offered the best future for physical HD media.  This announcement will likely come to be seen as the death knell for HD-DVD, barring any substantial craziness yet to occur, and I think that is unfortunate.  I will miss the format if it dies off completely.
