Forums - Gaming - Would you approve a Survival Horror FPS by Valve?

@Sqrl: So am I

I'm surprised none of my friends have taken out a restraining order with all I'm talked about the game. Looks like it could very well be the greatest survival horror game ever made.

So, who is everyone looking forward to playing as more: humans or zombies?

Myself, I'll probably be human more often for the scare factor, but if I want to be the 'scarer' instead of the 'scare-ee' I'll be a licker =)

@ Played: I've read a lot about the game and seen lots of videos, so I think I will get my hopes up, tyvm =)

And the '4' isn't just there to be gangsta--the number 4 plays heavily into the game. There are 4 survivors, 4 zombie players, and 4 settings to each campaign(?)

Zombies....no question....

Valve has nothing to do with L4D. It uses their engine, but that would be like saying Epic Games is making Too Human because it uses UE3

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left_4_Dead

It's mainly Turtle Rock, but Valve is helping, check the facts. It's an official game, not a mod. They call it the next Counter-Strike...or more like Counter-Strike and Resident Evil's spawn. They've done a few previews for the game, all at Valve's headquarters. This is not the same as Epic and its UE3 stuff.

Turtle Rock has worked with Valve on a few other games, mainly AI stuff, like the CS Bot in CS: Source, a pretty smart bot...and Left 4 Dead is taking AI to the next level, and it will be sweet.

Where did I say that it was a mod? It looks like an awesome game, and is my second-most-anticipated next to Brawl. Just because it uses their engine doesn't mean they are making it is all I was trying to say.

But now that I read that, I realized you are right.

Well I figured since you thought Valve wasn't helping, it was just a mod. But no, it's a full-on Valve game, it'll get the works. I just get a little mad sometimes cause I'm so excited for this game. I've got a bunch of friends that are ready to kill some zombies!

Oh and IllegalPaladin, HL2's AI never really got advertised that much. A step up from previous games, but nothing that revolutionary. CS's AI bots are pretty good, and all that procedural AI work in Left 4 Dead is what's gonna make or break the game...as anybody can make a map, and the AI zombie director should be able to spawn zombies intelligently, and your AI friends (if you don't have real ones) should be able to traverse the map perfectly, without bot paths.

By the way, is there any info about when exactly Left 4 Dead comes out? It really is a day 1 purchase for me!

I actually have a very good idea for a first person survival horror

PM it to me.

If it truly is good I'll steal use it, and you shall get no royalties.

I would approve pretty much anything made by Valve.

I'll 2nd that. Valve could make a game about taking a poo at someones porch, and still make it brilliant.

PS: Expect HL2 Episode 3 sometime in August/September and a first glance at Half-Life 3 in early '09 after the first official absolute announcement late this year.

I wouldn't get excited about any game that uses a number in place of a homonymous word. Left 4 Dead? All sounds a bit '90s gangsta for my liking.

Also, I wouldn't bet that Valve will be too heavily involved in development. I'm pretty sure they're just slapping their name on it for credibility.

Don't get me wrong, I'm hoping it will be great, but all the early screens look terrible and Turtle Rock don't exactly have the credentials to ensure quality.

Just don't get your hopes up is all I'm saying.

 A) It's just a number and a stupid reason to not play a game.  Left 4 Dead, there's 4 survivors, get it?  Yeah, it doesn't really matter though, it's just a number

B) Valve really is helping...Turtle Rock and Valve are practically one and the same, and if you like Valve quality games, then you'll like this, as Turtle Rock's made nearly all of CounterStrike what it is.

C) Valve is working with them to make sure it's quality.  It'll be using the Ep2 Source engine, and the early screens are not definitive.  I'm happy with the way it looks now though.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

I appreciate that the 4 in the title isn't an attempt to appeal to homeboys, but I still think it invites mockery - just like the Z in VGChartz!

And you are probably right, Valve don't just make great games, they also have an eye for potential (see Narbacular Drop for reference). I just don't like to set myself up for disappointment.
