I am so happy for Dark Souls and Dead Islands.

I think Dark Souls can sell over 2 million on PS360. Maybe 1.4 million PS3 and 700K on Xbox 360.

Indeed, this bodes well for hard, not dumbed down RPGs, and let's hope it does well on every platform it's released for, to show there's plenty of market space for such games.

Haha, I always smile when I see your old Thief avatar. Are you longing for Thief 4? I hope they won't dumb down that one.

Yes, I'm waiting for it, although huge backlog and PC getting too slow for the latest games will force me to wait longer. And I hope too they won't dumb it down. After all, despite the levels split due to XB1 RAM limits, and the simplification of the climbing gloves compared to the old rope arrows and far too many special arrows available compared to the shortage in the previous two, even Thief III managed to keep almost intact the original difficulty, if played at the most difficult settings. If they'll add regenerating health or shit like that, or even worse if they turn it into another FPS like they did to Syndicate, I'll hate them forever.

I love rope arrows! It's an underappreciated game mechanic. Loved them in Dark Messiah of M & M too.

I think the same company that made Deus Ex Rev is making Thief 4, isn't that a good sign though?

Excellent, I'd say: I read some reviews of Deus Ex: HR and I think I'll buy it too, they say they did some minor simplifications compared to the first, but without dumbing it down like the second, added enough eye candy to please graphics whores, but the game is still a hard and deep one, in some ways playing stealth is even more difficult, thanks to the improved AI of the enemies, and it hasn't graphics as its first attraction but as a way to improve the other most important aspects of the game, thanks God.

About rope arrows, yes they were a nice tool, more challenging than climbing gloves, as they worked only on wood, but luckily the stealth part in Thief 3 is intact and Garrett is still weaker than armoured soldiers, making almost impossible to not play it stealth, even at the lower difficulties that don't require to not kill any human.

Gears proving that software can really push hardware this far into the console generation,

Indeed it is.

Before anyone makes an argument of it I know that a couple or so years ago a game like Gears would have moved well over twice as many x360s as sold this week but for console that old those figures are good.

If the x360 had sold over 50K more than the closest other then it would have been very good, but I suppose that was to much of an ask.

That's the x360 latest exclusive out of the way and the next big exclusive hitter (I think) is Uncharted 3 on PS3 so as you said let's see how that compares hardware wise  - although I think Gears is a bigger franchise so it may not be a fair fight but that doesn't really matter.

there's only 1m LT difference between uncharted and gears and the original gears beat uncharted 1 but uncharted 2 beat gears 2 so it's up to which game is better but gears should get around 7.5m maybe 8 LT depending on how long the support for the 360 is while uncharted 3 will get around 6-7m LT

Oh, I never knew it was that close. I always thought for some reason Gears was light years ahead.

Ah well, that makes it a fairer fight then.

Thanks for the info.

Sales are so unusual this week.

-No Halo Reach, Kinect Adventures, or even Black Ops (360) in the top 40, despite the spike in console sales this week.
-Black Ops selling better on PS3 then 360.
- Wii sales getting weaker and weaker, and overall weak sales on all consoles (They were all selling around 200k last year at this time).
-360 not outselling the PS3 in EMEAA despite the Gears spike.

So odd, I expect PS3 to take #2 next week.

If console sales had increased due to a price cut, then yes, I'd consider it unusual that software sales didn't increase somewhat across the board.  However, hardware sales increased due to a specific game release, and it's obvious most people will be buying that game with the console, as opposed to other games.

lot of strange games up there and Dead Island is doing nuts for a new IP and it doesnt even have a meta of 90. Glad people are still buying Deus Ex, despite Gears out this week. Good for Gears, Only Xbox exclusive i truly like, great series

Interesting. Dead Island and Homefront both fell flat with reviewers and both have sold relatively well. I'm not sure what was different about Homefront that it captured gamers' attention, but I really think Dead Island caught some kind of pent up desire for some first person zombie action. There's been nothing really since L4D2. And Dead Island with it's tropical resort setting also gave it that classic sort of fun B-Movie vibe. So great timing to fill a void.

I guess so, im sick of zombies myself (move on to lycans) but at least they are not ruined like vampires are ruined. and the tropical setting is different

I hate zombies too since Thief I, that in some levels had more zombies than the available special ammo (fire arrows and holy water) able to kill them. But those levels rocked anyway sneaking amongst those bastards was thrilling. But vampires are beyond recovery, really, they became whiny emos with long teeth. I could even tolerate more zombies turning into grunges and punks more rotten than usual.

Gears of war 3 and Kinect Adventures share the same demograph? What you say makes sense, but overall I expected CoD and Halo to be higher on the list then they are now. Maybe people are getting real hyped for MW3 and Battlefield 3.

To be fair PS3 has Resistance 3, and COD is a much bigger game on 360. Then again Black Ops on PS3 barely crossed the top 40.

As for EMEAA, I thought Gears would still appeal to regions in Europe outside UK. It's a pretty big game, and it's not like french gamers don't appreciate a good shooter.

Wii is dying, I don't know if it will get a million seller week this year. I don't think any home console will.

I meant Reach etc for demographic that's why I referred to Kinect seperately.  My view is that a fair bit of the spike wasn't new owners but people trading their standard 360 for a Gears custom console (probably half my friends in UK did that for example with their current consoles).  Therefore those people already owned Reach, etc.  In addition the huge shift to buying Gears cannabilized demand for Reach, etc.

Kinect I think is totally seperate I meant that due to it's fairly low, steady sales at the moment if there are enough new releases it gets pushed down the charts.  I doubt demand for Kinect dropped due to Gears simply that Gears, Dark Souls on PS3, etc. all pushed it down the rankings due to their higher debut numbers.

As for Gears it just doesn't have the same appeal outside US/UK and a few other territories as it does within them.  Just one of those things.  Could be all manner of reasons.  For example I have some German and French friends who don't like it simply because of the heavy xenophobic vibe it gives off as Marcus and the gang crow "too ugly to live" as they kill another Locust.  They disliked Killzone 2 for the same reasons.  Like I said who knows but the Gears vibe certainly doesn't have worldwide appeal despite the fact it's gameplay is undeniably polished and strong.

Pretty ironic that, in percentage terms, it caused the biggest spike in Japan though!

Kinect demograph was a joke lol.

I agree with you about the spike being party due to current console owners buying a second 360. Lot's of people have secondary consoles this gen, I don't know why people do it, but they do.

I agree with you about everything, I just never really accociated Gears 3 with typical western shooters. I thought the story was interesting enough for it to appeal outside the western audience, but I guess not. I hope Forza 4 does better.

Yes, but many new console buyers get more then one game. I usually get two or three games when I buy a new console. So I would imagine that some of the new console buyers would also pick up Halo or CoD as well as Gears. All three franchises have a shared fanbase, and lots of hype, I would imagine most new console buyers would pick up another game with Gears. Guess they just got Deus Ex and Dead Island instead.

Really? Alan Wake, Splinter Cell, Lost Odyssey or any JRPG exclusive, Forza, Too Human? Nothing else?

Well I guess I'm not that different. Although I like make PS3 exclusive franchises, the only ones I love are Uncharted and GT.

Too Human, seriously??

im glad Pezus said it. Alan Wake was ok, nothing that made me say "i need to buy 360", Splinter Cell is on PC, not exclusive, Lost Odyssey was ok, again didnt scream " i need to buy 360", Forza i dont like sim racers, that goes for GT as well. what other Jrpg exclusives are there? I played Blue Dragon and it was just ok
