Forums - Sales - Do you think RAGE will be a sales flop?

Also remember that games with a post-apocalyptic theme have sold well recently.

Fallout New Vegas (84% Meta) 4,6 million on PS360
Borderlands (84% Meta) 3.8 million
Fallout 3 (94% Meta) 6.2 million

And those aren't even true shooters.

RAGE, the new game from Id Software (makers of Doom and Quake), is coming out in a few days...anyway, and it´s just my impression, it doesn´t seem like many gamers are interested in the game.

Dark Souls comes out on the same day, I think...a few days later, Batman Arkham City... then a few days later Uncharted 3 and Skyrim...I wonder if Rage will be heavily overshadowed by those games.

Why would Dark Souls happen to "heavily overshadow" a game by iD, which is noted for its graphics and has blown away people who played with it?  How much do you believe, in the end, Borderlands will outsell Rage?  If you do believe this is so, then do you also believe that Dark Souls will outsell Borderlands?

It is important to not confuse games that get a buzz on here, from a title that will sell large numbers out in the real world.

I wonder how much "Juice" Carmack has anymore though.

I mean, when the fuck was even his last full game?

Sure older gamers who were playing DOOM on their PC MIGHT be interested in going back but...

That said I'd be SHOCKED if Dark Souls outsold it.  I mean, didn't demon souls need a massive revision downword (or still does) after official numbers were released.

The development of this game is mostly for engie (ID tech 5), after Rage, they will use same engine to make Doom 4 and Quake 5.

Id software has huge IPs

And with that, make a chunk of change licensing the engine out to other developers to use.  There is money, money, money in licensing out engines.  Epic gets a good revenue stream from licensing out their engine.

Nope. They aren't interested in licensing their engines. They did it reluctantly in the past because there were basically no other good options. Nowadays you have Unreal Engine, CryEngine, Unity and more. In case you haven't noticed, they stopped licensing their engines after Quake 3, except for companies they outsource their IPs to like Raven and Splash Damage.

Interesting.  Looks like iD's acquisition had changed their tune.  Looks like the acquisition of them made the engine just for use by Zenimax companies.

I think iD are pretty much their own brand with quite a strong following. Not quite on the Blizzard/Valve scale, but a strong following nonetheless. And I think the last game was Doom 3 back in 2004. Not that long ago really.

I think it'll be a moderate success. Definitely no Fallout, Borderlands, RDR, etc. From what I've read, the game lasts about 15 - 20 hours with no MP. I can see the game having a problem with gamers renting the game instead of buying it.

One thing I've noticed on HD consoles is that the most popular games have a combination of accessibility, quality, & length.

This game wont flop. But that certainly doesn't mean it'll break out either. It has 175,928 pre-orders on the 360 in America (add onto that whatever it has in the rest of the world and whatever the ps3 numbers are). This would seem to me to be positioning it to be a moderate success. It'll probably get a decent bump during christmas aswell.

The developers pedigree and the strong support it should get in PC gaming circles (its number 1 on steam atm for example) should also give it an added boost. Plus its an FPS and its post-apocalyptic setting is quite popular.

I can only see it breaking out if all of this is matched by significant critical acclaim however.

Why won't Rage do Borlderlands level sales?  Do you expect Borderlands 2 to outdo Rage?

Yeah I think the legs on this game are going to be great!

Damn you RAGE doubters, you do not deserve to utter the name John Carmack! I curse you! Here, have at you!
Uhm... it's an article.

And now, gaze in amazement and disbelief at the power of the ®.

So, has John Carmack got his shit together, or what? There's your juice!

Yeah, in today's world people are being more conservative with their purchases. They're more likely to shell out $60 for a game if they know it's going to last them a long time. Borderlands does this with long length, replay value and multiplayer. Rage may faill with this due to being short AND lacking MP. This could be hurt bad by rents.

Although if it's good enough, it could reach very high sales. Batman Arkham Asylum did it, but I don't think it'll be as good as Batman. We'll see.
