By that logic there's no point in companies porting or updating their games from previous generations (like all the PS3 HD re-releases)and releasing them on current gen consoles because the "core" gamers have already played them.

And nevermind previous generations, but wasn't the PS3 itself the recipient of ports of many "year+ old games" that were first released on 360/PC like Mass Effect and Bioshock that still sold pretty well on it despite the smaller userbase?

There is a point for the publisher that wants to pick up gamers that missed out on the game on other platforms, but ports of old games will do nothing to boost the satis of the Wii U for "core" gamers, as if they wanted the games they would have already played them. Just like "Core" gamers that owned a PC or 360 didn't care about old games launching on the PS3, they cared about games like MGS4 you know games they couldn't already play.

The tablet only needs little RAM, remember: It is not a full featured tablet but only an external Display for the videostream from the Wii U.

By the way, rumors said that the WiiU-CPU has 1GB eDRAM (extrem fast RAM for the CPU) and GPU has 1GB RAM too. If this is true it would be fantastic.
