Forums - Gaming - How Does gamrReview stack up against User Scores?

It's amazing to think how far that part of the site has come. When I first started writing reviews for the site, the site literally had only 5 reviews in its database. We've now got over 900(!), and we'll hit 1,000 within the next month or so.

Interesting charts there Smeags. 2 of the reviews in the top table are mine (same game though, so only 1 really) and 6 of the ones in the bottom table :P

There's 20 (20!) pages of reviews I went through. I remember when we were inducted into gamerankings and so pleased.

But yes, gamrReview has definitely been a highlight of the network, so congrats on that Machina.

At least it wasn't you who reviewed Sonic Colors.

I find it hilarious that I'm responsible for two of the top 5 of the reviews that VGchartz reviewed super low compared to users: Duke Nukem Forever (I gave it a 3.7) and Pilotwings Resort (I gave it a 6.1).

Fun.

My Console Library:

PS5, Switch, XSX

PS4, PS3, PS2, PS1, WiiU, Wii, GCN, N64 SNES, XBO, 360

3DS, DS, GBA, Vita, PSP, Android

Lol user reviews are a joke (not just on here but on all sites like Metacritic). Fanboys just go in and give other exclusives low ratings.

I miss the user review feature.

Metacritic follows similar patterns. I personally feel everyone reviewers and users generally give games too high of scores.

And there's trolls, and overenthusiastic fanboys that underrate and overrate respectively.

Which makes this whole numerical thing inconsistant everywhere.

I was just thinking about this the other day. Imagine if video games had a site similar to RottenTomatoes (where they take each individual review, score it positive or negative, and then make a percentage to give a score), half the games would have 90% Fresh rating or higher.

@Marks

The User Review system was definitely a mess before (Bee Movie was the highest rated game on VGChartz ) but since VGC 3.0, it's become much more representative of the gamrConnect populace. I mean, even on my two lists there's not too many major games that stray too far from the pack.

It's interesting that the users rank almost all of the Wii games higher than gamrReview.

Sonic Colors was awesome, by the way.

Honestly I don't listen to reviews on VGChartz. Mainly because different reviewers have different tastes and honestly their aren't any reviewers on VGChartz I know well enough to trust with reviews.

Their is only two game critics I listen to and follow their reviews. Victor Lucas being my number one, in all my years of watching his reviews I have only really disagreed with him once. His reviews have always been pretty much spot on with my opinion to the point that I rarely buy a game he reviews harshly. Scott C Jones is my second favorite game critic, he is Victor's co-host and while I must say I disagree with his reviews a lot more often then Victor's I still find that for the most part he's right on the button.

Its sorta funny since Victor Lucas and Scott C Jones both run the gaming review show "Reviews On The Run", but I honestly disagree with a lot of the other staff on the show. I used to watch X-Play as well but Morgan Webb's constant bias against Nintendo and Adam's bias against many RPG's. They simply didn't match my gaming styles, I find that the best reviewers are the ones who enjoy all genre's and can give a good unbiased opinion about almost any game.

Unfortunately I have to say as a game critic I myself had bias. Mainly because I just can't stand sports games, I also have genre's I prefer alot more to others. I still tried to be unbiased I found myself being generous in reviews about sports games because I didn't want to be unfair. Just because I don't like sports games doesn't make the game bad.

So finding a reviewer who actually enjoys all genre's and has little bias against any publishers and such is very very rare. Victor Lucas is the only guy I know who reviews everything and always gives a good review. If VGChartz had one all star game critic who wasn't biased to any genre or publisher then I would likely read more reviews here.

VGChartz needs a face to those reviews. A single reviewer who sort of leads the show that everyone looks up too. Only problem with this is that you need one critic who is completely un-biased and respected by everyone. Which I admit is very hard to come by and even when I worked for my newspaper I realized I was not the critic Victor Lucas or Scott C Jones are.

I always strived to be the best critic I could be, I got a lot of support letters from fans but even if I got 30 or so positive feedback but one negative. I always felt very badly and sometimes I'd review a game that I didn't really enjoy and get more negative feedback then positive. This just made me realize I am not the perfect critic. On my site in fact I've hired a critic that isn't the best with writing skills but I know he enjoys every genre equally and lacks much bias against any of the publishers.

So I gotta admit a truly un-biased and God like reviewer is very uncommon. Which is why I only listen to two critics!

nice to know smeags.

it seems reviewer's and users are about agreeable. some of the user reviews are scary high for those bad games and makes me question how good our users taste really are.

i review games much more harshly with the only game scoring above a 9.3 from me is UC2 with a 9.7(but its so epic! you can fill it? even the multiplayer!!), and the lowest being a 4 i think likely COD blops.

most of my reviews are middle 8's almost like the sites reviews. some of my reviews scores some will disagree with but i'm not bothered by it.
