Forums - Gaming - Top 10 Genre Defining Game Franchises Of All Time

if this really is about defining the genres for better or worse, than god of war has absolutely no reason to be on the list. It has had no influence on its genre. This list isn't about what the best franchise is of each genre, but which one has had the most influence, and while its the most successful game in its genre, there is not one thing that god of war introduced to the hack and slash genre.

Also how the hell is resident evil not listed for survival horror. Again this isn't about which game is better, but which game defined the genre.

Finally just wondering why is halo's genre listed as sci fiction first person shooter. God of War isn't listed as mythological hack and slash.

I noticed part of the criteria was. (gave birth to genres that would not have existed with out them)
if that's the case Wolfenstein or more so Doom because of it's popularity should be on that list.

Yeah, that argument don't hold up so well here. Each one of these has their western sales higher than FFVII's. Keep in mind that three of the games on this list are officially "spin-offs".

Unless by success you mean critical reception amongst "core" consumers, which wasn't what I was originally referring to at all since I was basically saying that the only JRPG a lot of people have played is Pokemon.

No I was referring to DQ  a series you pointed out that influenced FF ,but note they didn't have FF the series they had FF7, why because after it came out to many and here I'm talking about mainly Western gamers who hadn't grown up on the older DQ / FF games ,and who in some cases found those games through FF7's success, it's popularity helped by it's huge media presence and the rise of the Playstation brand took it too heights on console at that time  that a single JRPG hasn't seen since, it was hard as a gamer even if you weren't interested in it not to know about it, that is why I said (B) even though pokemon has higher sales some times it's as much about how a game resonates at it's peak.

So, are you saying that the game that topped 10 million in a nation with some 130m inhabitants altogether, enjoyed a $50 million ad campaign in the West whilst nearly replicating the same popularity and was pretty much the most popular any single video game (barring SMB, which was bundled) had ever been does not more than exceed those criteria? I'm sorry, but you would have to be very deluded to claim that FFVII was at any time more popular than the Pokemon phenomenon from 1997-1999 anywhere. During that time, it was hard to be a kid (you needn't be a gamer) and not know about it.

Yes, most of that is hyperbole, but I think you get my message, xD.

@RolStoppable - Technicality, :P. They all clearly have less selling power than the main games. You can't call them main games or you'd be judging them unfairly. I'm broadly classifying any Pokemon game with less than normal selling power as a spin-off. It's largely irrelevant to my point either way, though. I just said it to add to the effect there.

How did Zelda not define adventure gaming or open word exploration gaming. it also was the first game where you could save your ptogress

Almost all are wrong here.

Gran Turismo deserves its spot.

As does Metal Gear Solid and Mario.

I wouldnt call Halo a genre definer. It refined perfectly. But did NOT define its genre.

Horrible list.

Oh and LOL at FF.

I think Tactics Ogre could've been on the list as well, pretty much every S-RPG onwards has just refined the model put down by Matsuno in Tactics Ogre
