I think what annoys him is that the score is not really representitive of the review and that many people (including me, but only to avoid spoilers) just look at the score and don't actually read the review properly so get the wrong impression

Exactly it is an amazing game and has reviewed as such, yet that wasn't enough for cliffy. You wouldn't see naughty dog or insomniac trash talk a reviewer and call him a troll or whatever.

Machina, look at it like this -speaking their opinion or not- What if the people of Naughty Dog, bitched about a few reviews for their highly acclaimed Uncharted 2? It's called class. That's why, even if all devolopers feel that way, they keep it to themselves.

Wouldn't that come off as super douchey and arrogant? I mean our views on this one in particular is a bit hazy because it's Cliffy, already an "outspoken" person. When you boil it down he really shows some bad qualities. Qualities I've never seen in him before to be frank.

The key is he was asked a question and answered it.  You may not like it but thats the whole point, you do not have to.  To call the man names because you disagree is where I have the problem.  The problem is you do not have a clear view of how he answered and in what context.  You like a lot of other people on the net knee jerk react jumping to moment to laud your critizism which is just as greedy and ungratefull.  Did any of you read the whole interview.  Did any of you even read the Eurogamer review.  Just because the review gave the game an 8/10 might not explain why he pointed it out unless you read the review yourself.

This is the problem I see most times in forums.  A site will take a simple sound bite out of a full review and go nuts on that one point.  Then when you read the whole thing later you find out that the context was totally taken out and the meaning lost. 

If Cliffy believes his game is a 9 or better, what is the problem.  It's his belief and he is entitled to it just like others are entitled to disagree.  To make a big point of it is hubris at it's best, especially if you are a person who throws around your opinion.

since when was an 8/10 a bad score? Cliffy is coming off as arrogant, like there is a game on meta with reviews all 90 and above.

besides this game will go on to sale millions, and be nominated and be winner of numerous GOTY/best shooter/best 360 game(maybe even best looking console game) stop being an ass Cliffy

jim sterling is a a$$hole and i lost any respect i had for him, any game dev has a right to think highly of the game they created and so does cliffy b. if someone doesnt like the review/score u gave there game, get over and dont then go whine about it to make yourself feel like a better person and then calling that game dev/producer names for disagreeing with your score.

They're both coming off as a bit immature and childish. There is no reason to call a reviewer a hater for giving an 8/10, and Sterling isn't much better with the name-calling.

Honestly, I don't understand why Cliffy B would consider an 8/10 a poor score. In addition, given that critics have been stricter with their reviews over the past year, I thought it was a given that Gears 3 would score lower than Gears 1 and 2.

It was also a joke, but I wouldn't really expect people to actually read what Cliffy has been saying. Here is a quotation from his twitter

In my heart I believe this is the best game this studio has ever produced in its 20 year history. Taking jokes out of context is not "news."
