If business analysts were particularly good at picking investments they would be wealthy investors not business analysts ...

One thing you have to realize when reading people’s market predictions is that analysts and investors tend to be backwards looking, and (as a result) tend to predict "Doom" for an investment when it is at or near its bottom and "Greatness" for an investment when it is at or near its top.

To make matters worse, most of these analysts have too short of a timeline when they're evaluating investments ...

In the case of Nintendo there is little doubt that when they revise their forcast (probably at the end of September) to account for the price cut there stock is going to take a beating; and this could be made dramatically worse by a market that is down (in general). 3 years from now, when the 3DS has probably sold between 45 and 60 Million units, the Wii U has sold between 20 and 40 Million units, Nintendo is selling a crap-ton of software, and Nintendo has to revise their forcasts to the upside their stock will (probably) start looking a little over-valued. If you know this is comming, and take advantage of the (potential) buying opportunity, then you will probably see a very good return in a couple of years.

If the 3DS is a flop with its 4.6 million sales in its first 5 months; then what was the DS with its 6.2 million in its first 5 months (and with a Christmas season), or the PS3 in its first 5 months at 2.6 million (and with a Christmas season)? Or the PSP at 2.4 million in its first five months (again, including a Christmas season). Were they all flops too?

Any way, the way I look at it is that stupid share holders have just made Nintendo stock 5% cheaper for me to buy, I have always wanted to invest in Nintendo. I have a good 25 thousand just lying in the bank, might as well; although I wonder if Nintendo is like Apple, or if they actually pay dividends?

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I've been saying this for ages, why have multinational media corporations not heard yet?

Wait until you have seen sales data covering up to the period of 25/12/2011 to make a judgement. Right now all we can conclude is that a lack of software will lead to less than spectacular hardware sales. The price is now right, we just need the big games launching this holiday season.

I dont think putting the original Mario Bros. on IOS is going to deter anyone from buying a 3DS, i dont think people are buying 3DS for playing old games they already have. I can see the point of competing against VC, but just about everyone has a smart phone, alot more than people have 3DS or will have 3DS, that is a huge market that they could tap into im they wanted. IMHO

At the very least, putting SMB on iOS is one less reason to buy a 3DS. Now add classic after classic and the 3DS starts to lose value. Nobody buys a new handheld to only play old games, but a purchase is the sum of many considerations, most notably "which games will I be able to play". An exclusive library of classics can be the deciding factor and once people bought the hardware, they usually buy games too.

So on one hand you have a couple of $ for an individual game sale on iOS and on the other hand you have the sale of 3DS hardware, 3DS software, DS software and Virtual Console titles. Which option should Nintendo aim for?

considering the amount of people that have smart phones versus those who have 3ds?? i say why not aim for both??

Nintendo is on a downward slide, but smartphones have nothing to do with it. I wish people would stop making that mistake. Smartphones and smartphone games are in a whole different market. It's like comparing PCs to home consoles. It is pointless.

Nintendo's problem now is that they have stopped making games for the mass market, and have gone back to making these niche titles in attempt to satisfy the "hardcore" gamer. But the tragedy is in satisfying the hardcore gamer, they could end up doing themselves in.

They didnt do themselves in before, so why would you believe they would now??

Because it isn't possible without decreasing the value of the 3DS. Once Nintendo starts to put some of their games on smartphones, people will expect more to come.

i really doubt that people will expect to see games like Mario 3D Land on phones because they can play a 20 year old game
