In the end, his sister and him reached a ladder they couldn't climb. They were stuck.
Perhaps I'll go into this more later when my brain wakes up, I just got up a few minutes ago and I'm still sleepy. :P

Just finished the game today .. Amazing
I think the boy was dead all along , he was going thought his life once more , the moment when he breaks through the glass at the end is like re-living the moment of his actual death , when he came to his sister she didn't turn around, she only felt his presence but he wasn't really there ... I think she was burying his body.
He is also the only one who has glowing eyes, the only one dead, the others were memories or visions , boys who tried to hurt him in his life maybe !
I though that he had arrived at his starting point too, and I thought that was a much more poignant and moving ending - he will be struggling forever to find his sister. With only vague memories of the journey he has undertaken, he will keep going.
After that, I found the actual ending quite rubbish. "Oh, he found his sister. Everyone is happy. The End."
I played and finished the game on my friends PC. I had a decent level of anticipation for it but I didn't really like it that much tbh.
