Microsoft has two online plans, and those would be Silver and Gold. Both allow for unlimited access to the content that is available for sale on the Marketplace. The service is identical between the plans. The Marketplace in no way cares whether you have a pay subscription or a free subscription. Timed exclusives only justify the platform nothing more. The products for sale are identical both in content and price.
Just one of the many reasons that I consider Gold to be overpriced crap. The Gold membership does not entitle the subscriber to special privileges when it comes to purchasing content. There are no discounts, free games, and hell they do not even comp you points to spend on the service. Gold only grants the user three things. The ability to play online. The ability to use third party services through Live. The use of social interfaces beyond messaging. Basically next to nothing considering you can already do all of that for free on other devices without paying for a subscription.
Gold is simply unnecessary, and not in the least justifiable. That is why I discontinued my subscription earlier this year, and only resubscribed after they bribed me with a full retail version of a forty dollar game. Which wasn't the only insane promotion they ran for the service. Which I expect to see again next year if they seriously expect me to pay for the service again. Bottom line these timed exclusives, and expansions in no way encourage anyone to pay for a Gold membership.
I just noticed that some of you were confusing Live with Gold. I really wish Gold had exclusive content, because frankly it has no content whatsoever. That is the problem you see. Microsoft doesn't actually give you anything to justify charging for the service. I really hope that those promotions I mentioned earlier were a omen of general discontent with the subscription plan, and might be encouraging Microsoft to develop original content over the tired repackaging job they have been offering for years.
