Forums - Gaming - EA: Why would you even need a new generation? What could a PS4 do?

The thing a lot of posters in this thread don't realize is they are saying they want better graphics, more advanced AI, more poly's, etc. The thing is while you could see a somewhat good sized jump in that area development costs will also rise. In other words if next gen were to start in the next two years you make be looking at $70-$80 new games. Do you really want that? Sure CGI type graphic may be possible in terms of the most advance current hardware but is it worth the cost? To me no way.

We don't need next-gen consoles till 2014 at the earliest IMO anything earlier and it simply will fail at retail. Most people are just now enjoying the switch over to HD and you aren't going to get the mass market to jump on board new hardware for only a 25% graphics boost for the cost that would entail. This is going to continue to be a loooooong generation mark my words.

I understand this and I don't think we will see CGI-quality  graphics next gen but that is what I want the end goal to be. Once they reach that level and are able to do anything they want to do with processing power we don't need any more consoles after that. And for that reason alone I think they will try to hold off CGI like graphics for at least a couple of console generations.

Sorry but he's mostly wrong.

WiiU will be noticeably better in many areas to the PS360.

Sure you'll have slightly faster CPU/GPU... that's a given and in the GPU's case thats better for many more reasons that just more polygons... it adds completely new technologies.

A big change will be in the raw internal memory available for game development. PS360 are severely limited on RAM and they were not built like the N64 with the capability to upgrade RAM easily.

Additionally, the fact is their competitor... Nintendo who's even bigger than EA in game publishing.. will be putting out a new system. Which to the masses, i.e. not the core group on this forum, will be new and exciting and automatically expected to be better than PS360.

This will mean MSony will have old machines that will start to really look worse when games simply look better on WiiU due to the newer GPU technology and larger RAM.

What this will mean is an incremental update for the neXtbox and PS4. Bringing the next gen from the massive gap of Wii to PS360 to be more like PS2(WiiU) to Xbox/GC(neXtbox/PS4).

MSony would be stupid to let it go more than a year on the market alone.

I'm pretty sure the Wii U will be roughly on par with a PS3 or Xbox 360. I mean didin't we already see the leaked specs?
The difference between Wii U and PS3 won't be noticable enough to warrant new consoles from Sony and Microsoft.

Nintendo is playing catch up. Those with a Wii should definitely upgrade as it will be their first HD console. But I don't see anyone with a PS3 or 360 buying a Wii U unless they're doing it for the Mario/Zelda/Metroid games..etc

The leaked CPU/GPU are definitely not on par with the PS360. They are a good 5 to 10% more powerful... i.e. a generation ahead.

Nintendo is playing catch up ... sort of... but they will also be expecting within a year of WiiU's launch to have new MSony consoles. So they will plan for what they think these will contain.

Im very content with this gen and wouldnt mind it still running on for another 6 years skipping next gen.

Of course we need new consoles. Yes, we have 1080p TV as Gibeau says, but how many games can display graphics at 1080p and 60fps on these consoles? And how many can do that with Anti Aliasing? We need more power to do that but not (much) more development resources.

And then there is the memory, with more of it we could see games with bigger worlds and/or more enemies on-screen.

At the end of every gen, we hear someone claiming that graphics can't be any better or that it will be too expensive and they end being proven wrong.

Please excuse my bad English.

You think 5-10% is a full gen ahead?  Games like uncharted, gears, killzone, are by far more then 10% better looking then the average game this gen.  So you think the wiiu going from CoD:MW2 to KZ3 is going to make anyone buy the wii if they own 360/PS3?  Games like GT5 are pushing 50% more pixels and the best car details this gen compared to the rest of the racing games running at 720p.   So by your 5-10 percent GT5 will still blow away the games on wiiu along with any AAA 360/PS3 game.

"Wii to PS360 to be more like PS2(WiiU) to Xbox/GC(neXtbox/PS4)"  So 360 is going from 2005 tech to 2006 graphics?  Wiiu if lucky will be pushing games barely better then top games this gen.  The 720/PS4 will come out and destroy anything this gen.  360 aracde is sub $200, and makes a profit, you expect 720 to come out and cost $250 and make money...

So nobody would buy it like the N64 games?

Heck it's EA.... if it were up to them we would be playing Fifa 2012 on the FIFA 95 enigne..

I meant 5x to 10x not %. Sorry my bad.

This is the first gen where it was such a massive jump (20x+)... its also why consoles cost so much more at launch (double)... at a loss to the manufacturer (also much higher than norm). They next-gen won't see a jump similar as PS2 to PS3... it will be far smaller in scale. They won't want to be in the red for so many years after launch.

So, if WiiU jumps in at ~5x-7x and neXtBox/PS4 are at ~8x-10x the power of PS360... then its feesible you'll see launch prices around $350 to $400 max with a smaller loss to MSony than current gen. This will also give a significant boost to available graphical technologies, memory, disc storage, etc for all of them

Also, I have no idea where you were going with that pricing ... I don't think I said anything about $250.

just read op and i have to say sure people have fun with their consoles and mybe the next generation would be to expensive but just to say "why should we need it, people are happy" is just stupid as hell.

it's like someone hundred years ago would have said "my carriage is so great why should we try to get a new model or even to develop a car"

we can just imagine the experience and only if we have the product we know why it was good to make it. he says that we have everything (internet etc.) man but how can i know that there isn't anything else i don't know about? with the snes controller i thought i will never need something else and nowadays i couldn't live without a analog stick on my pad.

and btw just to improve the ai is reason enough for me to get a new generation in the next few years. and i don't care if i have to pay more for games next generation i mean hey i paid the same for games 15 years ago then i pay nowadays but my loan increases every year 3% on average so even if i would have to pay $100 per game wouldn't be more percentage of my whole income than it was 15 years ago. sure it would be much more than i have to pay atm but it's stupid to think games have to cost always the same with everything else increasing over the decades.

the reason why we get more loan than 20 years ago is because we need more or otherwise cost are increasing because we have more and if nothing would increase someday everybody could buy everything which is not possible because someone had to produce or whatever all this.
