my sister has had a similar issue with getting the guy that sells the cannon and crane to register the mic, she has a DS phat, so it may not be a DS issue. we also tested out on mario Kart and Nintendogs and found no issues at all.

strange i have the same problem at the same place in zelda.
I managed to pass but now my girlfriend is playing the game as well and it didn't work. (and yes we tried everything). Then I put in some headphones (with mic) and it immediately worked.
so probably my mic is broken as well, but i have to try it with some other games like brain training before i send it to Nintendo (will take some weeks)

strange things happen with Zelda and the DS. But in my own game, my voice did work. And now in a second game it doesnt. (but it did with the headphone)
