Forums - Gaming - IDC Predicts PS3 as Lead Platform in 2015

This article says the wiiU will be out 2013, but we will see it 2012 and we will see 720 in 2013. PS4 is harder to tell but I would say probably 2014, possibly even late 2013.. who knows?

̶3̶R̶D̶   2ND! Place has never been so sweet.

Between, this conclusion seems like a bad interpretation to me. The guy is saying: "PS3 will have the largest active installed base of any game console worldwide by 2015." Keywords, being active installed base.

After all, he expect Nintendo to release Wii U in 2013 and Microsoft to release the new Xbox in 2014, while Sony will only release the new console in 2015. Which mean its very likely that PS3 will have the largest active install base in 2015.

That is the keyword.

Even if a user only uses PS3 just as a multimedia hub, it would still counted as a active install base. It never said it's gaming related. The analyst will never be wrong.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Idk maybe when there's a massive price cut(or another slim revision) then we'll see.

257M consoles? Then that meant they'd be averaging between 85-86M for the 3 home consoles(if Xbox720,PS4WiiU aren't included). Unless Wii stops selling, then this article is just shoddy at its best. I'm guessing Wii's holiday performance this year is going to be the indicator if PS3 could turn the tables. I still doubt it. I say PS3's best chance currently is outselling the Xbox360 and being outsold by the Wii for about 10-15M.

A new study has been published by the leading global provider of market intelligence IDC which forecasts the demand for, and profit associated with, video game console hardware and software through 2015. The study, which is based on surveys, interviews and other market trends, claims that by 2015 the PlayStation 3 will be the dominant console.

Lewis Ward, research manager for Consumer Markets states:

Total console hardware and disc-based software revenues are on track to slide a few percent in 2011 compared to 2010. But prognostications that consoles have peaked as a product category are premature. I expect that the launch of the Wii U, a revamped interactive entertainment console from Microsoft in the 2014 timeframe, and the arrival of Sony’s ‘PS4′ circa 2015 – along with more than a few exclusive, innovative games – will help drive a new wave of console-centric spending in the next several years.

Additional information mentioned in the 59 page document includes:

  • Direct global console hardware and disc-based software sale revenue will increase at a (CAGR) of 3.6 percent from 2010 to 2015, reaching $39.7 billion in 2015.
  • Installed base of actively used game consoles won’t keep pace with the number of worldwide households.
  • 257 million active consoles worldwide by 2015.
  • PS3 will have the largest active installed base of any game console worldwide by 2015.

Sony recently cut the price of the PS3 in all major regions, making it a steal at just $249. If you couple that with Sony’s commitment to first party excellence, it makes it kind of hard to refute the International Data Corporation’s claims.

I'm thinking this means, that in 2015 the PS3 will have the most people still playing the console, even though the install base could be smaller than 360 and/or the WII.

yeah but too get to that point and to be relevant,PS3 will get bigger than Wii

Bigger on the active user base but not necessarily bigger as a whole.

These 'studies' cannot be very accurate at all.

i know

what i am saying is that to be bigger that time the brand will have to be relevant so much and that revelevancy will push PS3 to have bigger sales and ninty console strategies to kill a console will help it

Should be well over 100 million sold by 2015. Rest of this year and 2012 are gonna be big with the new $249 price, and whatever year they drop it to $200 will be massive as well.
