So after some digging, I found that at the end of calender 2006, Nintendo reported DS shipments of 35.6 million.

VGC reports total current sales at 64.6 million, likely to be about 64.8 million with Japan, only 12 months later.
DS only appears to have spot shortages at the moment, so when Nintendo reports shipments for their quarterly report in a few weeks, they will likely be above 30 million for the calender year.
30 million is roughly what PSP has sold in it's entire life. It's far more than XBox or Gamecube sold over 4+ year cycles, and is only just short of what Sega Genesis and N64 managed in their entire 5+ year cycles. As far as I can tell, PS2 and GBA both maxed out around 25 million units in one year, and DS did about 21 million in 2006. http://www.videogamecharts.com/page2.html
All this, and DS is yet to recieve a price cut.
"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.
