Forums - Gaming - THQ Fires 200, Closes Three Development Studios

source

THQ announced this week "a strategic realignment" of its internal studio development teams - which in laymen's terms means it has shut down a studio or two and cancelled some long-standing game project. The company announced that it was shelving the MX vs. ATV franchise, closing two studios in Australia, and laying off the development team at the company’s Phoenix location. The Quality Assurance team in Phoenix will remain. The closures will mean 200 layoffs, according to THQ.

THQ said this was done in part because it is in "the process of transitioning its portfolio away from licensed kids titles and movie-based entertainment properties."

"With this realignment, we are narrowing our focus to high-quality owned IP with broad appeal that can be leveraged across multiple platforms, and to work with the best talent in the industry. By right-sizing our internal development capacities for our console portfolio, our five internal studios are focused on delivering high-quality games with talented teams driving the execution of those titles to market," said Brian Farrell, President and CEO, THQ. "As we have outlined in our business strategies, we are making shifts to reduce movie-based and licensed kids’ video games in our portfolio, which underscores our strategy to move away from games that will not generate strong profits in the future.”

"We will continue to evaluate our capital and resources to concentrate on fast growing digital business initiatives such as social games, mobile and tablet-based digital entertainment," Farrell added.

THQ noted in its announcement that "all affected employees are eligible to apply for open positions within the company globally."

For developers in Australia this is probably not much of an option - for obvious reasons.

High quality owned IP's? What high quality IP's? They have none!

Their business seems to be completely driven by ego. They want to be in the same league as the big boys, so they abandon their bread and butter (the licensed kids titles). It really doesn't make much business sense. They act as if making video games based on cartoons and animated movies would ever be something that dries up.

My thoughts exactly.

In a year, they will simply crash.

Basically, they have decided to try and focus on top quality core games, but failed miserably, with Homefront, Red Faction Guerilla and more failing commercially and critically

It is a shame, as it was nice to see their ideas, but their vision has not come to pass at all

i think they will be bought out by sometime next year, if this vision of there's doesnt increase there profits to a healthy level.
i think m$ would be smart and buy them, it would help them increase there ip's and strengthen there 1st party studio portfolio. also i am sure they shouldn't cost them too much , too buy them.
anyways good luck to THQ , they will need it.

THQ are a waste of money.

Aside from De Blob and RF: Guerrilla. nothing good came out of them this gen. MS would be downright retarded to spend money on them... and this declaration is basically their goodbye letter.

THQ own Relic?

De Blob, RF, and Warhammer!

Yup, though I would much prefer another CoH like title rather than Warhammer

Also, I would count Red Faction out of that, Guerilla was good, but I thought Armageddon kind of ruined everything?
