That's what you get for years of constant piracy........

They'll get years of constant piracy as a result too.

Lol

There's one gaming segment that has been always on for the last 10 years+.

it's call MMORPG and there's the one segment not suffering massively from piracy.......

MMO's can be pirated. Just download the torrent file, install the game and then play on a private server.

There are quite a few large sized private servers out there pal.

yep Wow has been constantly on the top of the torrent download for the last few years .

/sarcasm off

Are you comparing games that sell 1 million copies and get downloaded 3 millions times on torrent with games that sells 20 million copies and get downloaded 100 000 times ?

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

well I see there point, it's in there interest to protect themselves from piracy, and this one of the easiest, less costly, and most efficient way to do it..... I don't blame them and it's actually one of the easiest way for the custumer too.... no need for a serial that you might loose etc....
so yeah I'm for it if comes down to choosing a way to do it..... but my real issue here is..... what do i do if I'm not home or next to a hot spot???? so if every gaming company does that..... no more gaming if I'm camping.... and don't give me that wireless Bullcrap (talking to the gaming companies) I ain't gonna pay an extra fee to have access at a subpare technology at more than extravagant prizes.....
so what we gonna do ????? that's right we're gonna crack it.... way to go.....

How many copies each game sells legitimately is irrelevant. WoW isn't the only MMORPG in existance, it is only the most popular. CoD is the highest selling title every single year while also the most pirated. I wouldn't be surprised if WoW is the most pirated MMO out there as well.

Also MMOs, thanks to private servers enable even legit buyers of the software to completely bypass paying the monthly fee. Once again this is valid on any MMO, regardless of what it's sales are. Those games are vulnerable in more than one way. Legit buyer who plays without paying monthly fee and pirates who bypass initial purchase as well as monthly fee.

This stupid DRM idea serves no purpose for any of us here whether you think it does or does not and their reasoning (Auto-updating) is lame too. Frequent patches happen really only at the beginning of an MMO's life, after that you may see one, maybe two a year.

I was shocked if I saw a Diablo 2 update once a year.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

MMOs host stuff on their servers instead of storing it on the user's PC. Unless always-online DRM does something similar, it won't work. As long as major components aren't hosted on the publisher's servers, this kind of DRM can't work. It makes cracking the game harder but it won't prevent it. Personally I'm not going to get any game that uses always-online DRM, even if it means not buying any games at all.

Auto-updating does not need always-on... See Steam, for example.

And if you don't know what Steam is. Perhaps you know what Windows Update is. You can switch it on auto and it'll just do all the auto update for you and you don't have to be always-on.

The most disturbing fact about this, that it is COMPLETELY useless.

Pirates will just disable the online check and can play actually better than legit users, because they don't need constant internet connection. Pirates are able to play the game on the go on their laptops while normal users can't. If legit buyers are hurt more than pirates, you know you're doing something wrong.

updated: 14.01.2012

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

so its a half ass win for everyone.
