VGChartz has the series at 26.73M sold to retail, without the MG/MG2 data.
I think the numbers here will be pretty accurate. Maybe undertracking a game or 2 a little bit.
This now puts it ahead of Mega Man, which has sold 28 million worldwide.

MGS4 is undertracked in Japan by about 100k. Other than that I would assume we're mostly accurate.
