Forums - Sony - What Sony should've done at the start of PS3; 1 SKU, multiple HDDs

Even the Wii - just one unit - is selling well as a single SKU, but I needed a session on the difference between a DS and DS Lite was.

The original DS was rather bulky and unattractive to what a consumer would want as a handheld. I have 1 original DS, one white DS Lite and a Zelda DS Lite. The original was bulky and slightly heavier. I used 2 DSs when I go to work, school or whatever. One was back-up in case the one was low on power. The original DS was really bulky to carry around in one of my pouch-pockets in my cargo pants. When I had a Lite in my pocket, it looked as wide as a wallet would, minus being elongated. With the Lite, the revision was to make it more appealing towards a consumer. As I read on VGChartz one time, the original DS was and looked as if it were unfinished; a prototype, if you will. While owning the original DS for 2 years before the Lite, it was losing its charge and the battery consumption was weakening. Even giving it a new battery to charge on, it wasn't keeping it, so I was forced to purchase another DS Lite. The main reason why I got 2 DSs is because I play Pokemon still and would need to trade characters across.

One thing I do like about the original DS is that you can play it outside and in direct sunlight, AND you can switch the backlit light off and on. With the Lite, it's very hard to play it outside and the screen darkens. Even in the shade, it was still hard to see. Plus the screen was more vivid. Lite was more of an improvement, but I wish you could have the option to turn off the backlit light off completely.

You can tun the backlight on and off with the Lite, too.  Actually, it's much better than the original DS!  It's the small Sun icon in the lower-left of the opening screen (where you choose to play a DS game, do Pictochat, DS Download Play, or GBA game).  There are four settings: 'off', 'enough to play in bed at night with no lamp on without straining your eyes', 'playing under normal conditions', and 'you're completely blind if you can't see what is happening here'.

Everything is so easy once you look at all the mistakes a company had to make to get there.

Reason why I don't bother with these types of threads.

2 SKU's for Sony wouldn't have been bad. The 20GB and 60GB versions had easy to understand differences.

One of the things that I think will eventually happen is that the PS3 will go full software for it's BC. I think it was even part of the original plan but Sony was forced by the market to hit lower price points so they pushed out the PS2 hardware free version of the PS3 far before they were ready to. I don't think Sony wanted to have such a feature discrepency between the SKUs. Going full software will eventually allow them to eliminate the PS2 chips from top to bottom and reduce more costs. The market reaction to the PS3 made Sony go into "damage control" mode and quick changes had to be made. Again, this is just my opinion.

Thank god for the disable signatures option.

As we know, Sony has made 4 SKUs throughout 2007. It may have diversified the choice for consumers, but it left them puzzled and confused on which model to choose. Now, if Sony had just not included BluRay this would have all been fixed!

Fixed!

The hard drives are just hand waving to give customers a precieved difference in the value of the system. They have had very little to do with the overall PS3 stradegy except that each unit must have one and its size gives the PS3 SKU it's name. I can't imagine the cost difference between 20, 40, 60, and 80 gigs is more than a couple dollars on the grand scale.

You are right that if they had know what they know now back at launch things would/should have been different and saved the company money/trouble but .... c'est la vie.

Final* Word on Game Delays:

The game will not be any better or include more content then planned. Any commnets that say so are just PR hogwash to make you feel better for having to wait.

Delays are due to lack of proper resources, skill, or adequate planning by the developer.

Do be thankful that they have enough respect for you to delay the game and maintain its intended level of quality.

*naznatips is exempt

I gotta agree with that. I think maybe start with a 20/40 gigabyte model as the only one, but make it fully upgradable. Keep the Backward compatibility and all the other features and go from there. They would be easier to cut prices and they can make money off of the hard drive upgrades. They could have like a 60, 80, even 100 gb hard drive for upgrading.

^^

Also there would be less confusion on what each model can do. Some people (no offence to anyone) are idiots when buying the 40 gig model and aren't aware you can't play your ps2 games on it. So if there was only one model with B.C., that you could upgrade the hard drive on, then it would be easier for the consumers.

What Sony needed at launch: a $400-$450 price point any way possible, with rumble, with not-broken, HD-supporting BC. They would have been set, and that would have been a nice setup.

"woulda coulda shoulda"

It doesn't matter. It's history. Time to move on.
