2 SKU's for Sony wouldn't have been bad. The 20GB and 60GB versions had easy to understand differences.

One of the things that I think will eventually happen is that the PS3 will go full software for it's BC. I think it was even part of the original plan but Sony was forced by the market to hit lower price points so they pushed out the PS2 hardware free version of the PS3 far before they were ready to. I don't think Sony wanted to have such a feature discrepency between the SKUs. Going full software will eventually allow them to eliminate the PS2 chips from top to bottom and reduce more costs. The market reaction to the PS3 made Sony go into "damage control" mode and quick changes had to be made. Again, this is just my opinion.
