I'm certain of the 3DS being an outstanding success in terms of both sales and critical acclaim of it's games by the start of the 9th generation. Sales may be slow and launch aligned the PSV may be ahead for a while, but there is no doubt in my mind the 3DS will prevail.

It will probably end up alright in the end but frankly I don't know why, all Nintendo really does is make the same games over an over sometimes adding new innovations sometimes not, it might just because I've been gaming for awhile but they seem stale and as for the 3DS they don't even have the games they put out on every system on it yet, they were just plain dumb to expect decent 3rd party support and the 3D seems pointless on a handheld especially one with an accelerometer, but if Nintendo wants sales to pick up they have to release good game
either is a possibility, but the games that have sold every Nintendo handheld will likely come to save the day.
i'll add this. Nintendo will profit no matter wht so don't worry about Nintendo.
But why, Brokenbones, why? Every Nintendo handheld has had great third party support. Why not now? And, although some 3DS games do have motion controls and 3D at the same time (Zelda for example), the upcoming (I hope) MGS3 automatically turns the 3D off when you use the accelerometer. I think/hope this becomes 3DS standard.

3D Mario games have not been killer apps. So it won't be fine. Mario Kart is still up in the air, but even being hits on the N64 and GC weren't enough to help sales.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

I agree. If I remember, the DS had more doom and gloom talk after the same time when it launched. People were sure the psp would kill the ds. The sells weren't originally that great and it didn't have many games. Pretty much the same situation with the price cut. The 3DS has better games than the DS had at the same time.

I remember. There was a pic on the internet at the time of a DS with Super Mario 64 running on it. Yoshi was on the bottom screen with a tear running out of his eye, saying "Please Touch Me" (originally, before each stage, Yoshi would say "Touch Me!". There were graphics comparisons between Ridge Racer running on the DS and Ridge Racer running on the PSP. Even I, a huge Nintendo fan, wasn't to happy with the DS at the time. I remember my first three games were Feel The Magic XX XY, Sprung, and Super Mario 64 (which I swore I wouldn't buy but there was nothing else to play at the time). The DS wound up doing okay, from what I'm told.
There haven't been any game of the year candidates (unless you count "The Greatest Game of all Time") but I've been thoroughly entertained with the 3DS. I haven't even tried second string games like Pilotwings, Nintendogs, Dead or Alive, or Splinter Cell and I bet I've logged in over 100 hours of gameplay in my first month. The 3DS will be fine.

Your personal experience is not proof the system is okay. The Gamecube and N64 would sell nearly as much as the PS1 and PS2 if personal experience sold systems beyond the user.

I'm not trying to prove anything except that the 3DS library is better in its first six months than the DS library was in its first six months (which is still nothing more than my opinion). And tossing in the Gamecube/N64? These systems both launched in the neighborhood of a year later (give or take a few months) of their competition. Come on, man!
