Even now, with all of this doom and gloom, I have no doubt in my mind that the 3DS will be a massive success. There's just too much potential. I say that next year this time, we'll look back at this period and laugh at how cynical we've been.

I agree. If I remember, the DS had more doom and gloom talk after the same time when it launched. People were sure the psp would kill the ds. The sells weren't originally that great and it didn't have many games. Pretty much the same situation with the price cut. The 3DS has better games than the DS had at the same time.

I remember.  There was a pic on the internet at the time of a DS with Super Mario 64 running on it.  Yoshi was on the bottom screen with a tear running out of his eye, saying "Please Touch Me" (originally, before each stage, Yoshi would say "Touch Me!".  There were graphics comparisons between Ridge Racer running on the DS and Ridge Racer running on the PSP.  Even I, a huge Nintendo fan, wasn't to happy with the DS at the time.  I remember my first three games were Feel The Magic XX XY, Sprung, and Super Mario 64 (which I swore I wouldn't buy but there was nothing else to play at the time).  The DS wound up doing okay, from what I'm told.

There haven't been any game of the year candidates (unless you count "The Greatest Game of all Time") but I've been thoroughly entertained with the 3DS.  I haven't even tried second string games like Pilotwings, Nintendogs, Dead or Alive, or Splinter Cell and I bet I've logged in over 100 hours of gameplay in my first month.  The 3DS will be fine.
