As we all know by now the 3DS is getting a Price Cut on August 12th in America and also getting a Price Cut in Japan and Others in the same week. I don't know the prices of systems in Japan or Others but I do know how much a DS costs in America.
The 3DS will be $170 starting on August 12th...this is the same exact price of the DSIXL and only $20 more than the DSI.($70 over DS Lite)
I find this a little odd for Nintendo to lower the 3DS price and keep the DSI/DSIXL price the same. It is a strategy that could work but could also backfire.
If idea backfires: People may find the 3DS to be cheep and flawed due to the 3DS being the same price of a last gen system.
If idea works: People could find the 3DS price to be an amazing value sitting next to a $170 DSIXL and $150 DSI since the 3DS can obviously due much more.
I am certain that the 2nd option is what Nintendo is trying to do by matching the 3DS price to the DSIXL's.
If the 3DS does start picking up in sales after the Price Cut...what will it mean for the DS? You can't say that the DS will still sell due to its library of games because 3DS can also play DS games. IMO, I can't see any reasons for anybody to pick up a DSI or DSIXL after the Price Cut...leaving only DS Lite to sell for the DS line.
What do you think about Nintendo's plan of selling both the DSIXL and 3DS for the same price? Will it work or fail?
What will happen to DS?
