Hes right. Nintendos Wii was the only profitable system from the very beginning. Microsoft and Sony were bleeding money from the beginning of the  gen until about 3-4 years after launch. Sony and Nintendo know gamings roots. It involves some sort of handheld market and they they are both capitalizing on it. The handheld market is larger than that. Handhelds are more profitable than Kinect. It's Microsoft who is out of the loop my friend. Look how many PSP's and DS portables have been sold. Microsoft doesn't dedicate enough companies into variety. The focus companies on one thing or nothing at all. They still have a lot to learn.

Your posts are becoming more laughable. MS would stupid to enter the handheld market, now more then ever. MS Xbox division was profiting 2 years after 360 debuted, not 3 - 4.

Indeed.  Why would any company enter the dedicated hand held market now... ?

Actually profitability is dependant on what Microsoft has to offer. Quite frankly thats all up to them. People asked why Microsoft would even join the console race, but they did and look at them now.

There was great scope, space and achievability for a console though, but VS 3DS, Vita and the ever popular ios products?? and mobiles .... just no. No room whatever they come out with.

Microsoft puts their OS into other peoples phones? Wow....my whole argument involved them creating their own tech. I understand that HTC, Samsung and others were already doing it. Actually...if Samsung joined the gaming race Sony would shit themselves. Just saying.

Well, they have shown they know how (this far into the console cycle) to make huge profits. I wouldn't go as far as saying they are the only ones who know how, though, no.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

With latest quarterly results in and Sony and now Nintendo bleeding money, it becomes that Microsoft is currently the only profitable player in videogames. Sure some will be quick to point to the past but I'm talking about for the recent times.

Moreso, Sony has a history of years of bleeding money so nothing new for them, but to me both the Wii U and 3DS are bad hardware and they are Nintendo's future, so I think Nintendo has a long stretch of struggles ahead of them as well.

This gen alone nintendo made more money tha MS and sony together so... I think this price cut is just nintendo over reacting...

FYI

Nintendo share price is down 10% today.... 10% in one day! The markets arent impressed.

That makes it down over 43% in 2011 alone. Almost half the value of the company gone in 7 months.

FishyJoe would have loved it.

the big 3 are doing things differently, and wht they do differently may not always be the way to profit.

remember this. all 3 companies have made losses this gen and turned a profit. running a business is a balancing act that my not always work.

The difference for Sony and MS is that gaming isnt their core business and to a degree they can suffer losses and prop that up from elsewhere or they can use gaming as a trojan horse for other areas of their business.

Gaming is Nintendo's business.

with all do respect was this comment really worth quoting?

i know that already. yea Sony being able to bring profits from there movie  and gaming divisions to cover wht ever else need be coverd is likely the best part of a company with a multicore business

Gaming consoles were set to become media hubs and try to take a place in peoples living rooms rather than kids bedrooms.

Dedicated handhelds are at a dead end.

Portables are set to be portable multimedia devices thanks to Sony pushing what Nintendo and companies like Tiger electronics made huge.

The Wii U is impressing no one. That would also explain why the DS just dropped to $170. Thanks for the info. An $80 drop in six nng tmonths. This just show how smart Nintendo is playing the game this gen. They make consoles with tech that is nowhere near worth what they are selling it for and profit unreasonable amounts of money. Now they have to sell the consoles for what they are really worth.

you mean like a smartphone?

In a way yes, especially involving companies like AT&T into the mix (which just isnt a kosher idea). Sony has been in denial that they want to attack the smartphone market when their actions and Microsofts (with their portable OS) are telling a different story. I guess denial is the mother of speculation with gamers these days. Its pretty cool seeing my friends at school sign into Xbox Live and chat with friends on the MS interface on their MS OS Smartphones. Games will follow heavily.

First off Sony can take more hits than Microsoft in terms of profit and loss because the investors are well aware of Sony's videogame division and support it. They will prop it up and have been for quite a while. Yes, this is Nintendos bread and butter, but Microsoft makes one wrong move the investors bitch. They don't really like the gaming division, but if its profiting they aren't complaining. I saw a video on the creation of the Xbox in marketing and pretty much the key people involved in its existence have been fighting for it to continue (and still are) literally a handful of people. Bill Gates was just a face. I cannot imagine how much those guys had to go through when making the proposition for the kinect to the investors. They have my respect. Well...not Bill...as far as the gaming industry goes.
