Wii Sports and Brain Age changed things, Super Mario Galaxy really is nothing comparatively speaking and will just be a footnote in gaming history.

Personally, I think the game is the perfect representation of Nintendo's strategy. On the one hand, the game is perfect for the hardcore gamers. While not super challenging, the game requires some thought and is a blast to play. It's depth is incredible and there's a ton of creative and unique content amongst the various worlds. At the same time, it's a great game for casuals. My sister loves super mario galaxy more than any other game for the wii because she likes taking turns with me to get a star. We'll alternate which of us plays as second player and it's probably the most effective tool in making her a hardcore gamer yet. |
SMG will be remembered fondly by an entire generation of gamers as one of the games which defines their early gaming experiences. It will be as iconic as Super Mario 3, Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 were. This is a feat which I think Sunshine failed to achieve, good though it may have been.

There's no way of knowing the exact ratios, but I've always felt a majority of people buying the Wii were long time Nintendo fans, and other gamers disinterested in the direction the industry was taking. I think the success of Galaxy goes a long way towards proving me right, always honestly there's on way to know where it'll go now.
It all depends how many great games the Wii will have . If it will have many AAA games , than SMG could partially fade away in time , much faster as OoT or Mario 64 ...

I disagree. SM3 and SMW are still iconic, despite being released in Nintendo's golden age.

"and other "gamer" games have been riding the coattails of SMG. "
oh come on. There are far too many "analysts" in here. Millions have purchased a Wii prior to X-Mas and you put increased software sales down to SMG? Perhaps they just want something to play?
SMG is a good game, it sold well but not spectacularly but it has brought no changes. Expect droppoff after christmas as for all games.

Don't you mean "epitome"?
Anyway, as others have said, it is too early to tell as it is the Holiday season. If it holds up after it is finished then you might have a point but you seem to be jumping the gun here.

Still seeing that for the first time in 10 years Im actually thinking of buying myself a Nintendo console ( not handheld , and I got my Gamecube as a present so that doesnt counts ) I could sware that this is Nintendos golden age . Yes , I agree SM3 is still big , but far not as known as OoT or mario 64 ... or maybe even SMB ... that may be wrong , because I only say this based from some forum discussions ...
