OK, as a Nintendo gamer who wil never own a PS3 (though my wife will), this doesn't disappoint ME specifically, but it has to be the biggest overall downer for the gaming communtity. For me, the biggest downer would be Microsoft's failure to bring the 360 down to $299 . |
Disappointing sales - Sales are equalling 360's so far in its life so its not a big disappointment, although not as high as some may have expected 1)As former industry leader, Sony is certainly not content with matching the performance of a competitor who sold 1/5 as many consoles last gen. 2)MS has always been pretty well shut out of 1/3 of the gaming market, while Sony has been competitive in all 3, so while the totals are similar, proportionately it doesn't look as good for Sony. 3) The sales boost can be attributed to the late price cut. It was on track for much worse sales for much of the year. Mismanadged PR - ?? 4) The now-legendary offer for $1000 for any PS3s seen sitting on shelves and keeping secret that the 60Gig price cut was in fact a clearance sale, and that future models would lose complete BC are the ones that spring immediately to mind (all of which is piggybacking off of even worse statements in 2006). Juggling Models - Making a cheaper 40 gig model was a good move, it sold a lot of systems (quicker than the 20 and 60 gig) 5) Done because the 20 Gig model was a complete disaster, and the 60 Gig was causing them to hemmorhage money. These were never part of Sony's plan, and was done out of sheer desperation. Prices - Prices were only lowered, never raised. How can this be disappointing? this is great 6) Again, they were lowered as a result of the disappointing console sales. Games not meeting expectations - Sales aren't as high because of low install base, quality is true for some of them but its not like nintendo has no bad games. 7) The low user base once more due to disappointing sales, and the titles so many were claiming would turn the tide (most notably Lair, Heavenly Sword, and Uncharted) didn't. The only highly touted Nintendo title that I can think of in the same vein was NiGHTS, and it was never pulled out as a console saver by fans the way Lair and Heavenly Sword were. OK, as a PS3 owner who will never own a wii... |
