Forums - Nintendo - Why people kept mentioning Mad World as if it's an AAA game?

I've never seen anybody praise MadWorld - even before it was released. I'm fairly certain that everyone anticipated that it was going to be terrible.

Funny. I see it being proof that "hardcore AAA" games don't sell on the Wii quite often.

People that likes to hate Wii/Nintendo needs a reason to continue hating. Saying Madworld is a 'hardcore AAA' and a big flop (even when is not) is their reason.

Agendas are all over the place, you see HD fans calling it a great game after it didn't sell that great to help their arguments, I see Wii fans calling it great until it sold poorly after which they seem to be able to find all kinds of faults in it (seriously go look at the comments for our review of the game, it's mostly people saying we were too harsh on value). Nobody likes to make comments that hurt their overall argument.

In other words, it's the Wii's Haze... The end.

On a console starved of mature games.... it was a mature game, that's why.

I bought it on launch and it is one of the few games I played but didn't complete.

Repetitive beat-em-up sums it up perfectly, the art style whilst different is nothing special and I got bored very quickly.

Honestly, I think has a lot to do with it. Especially early on.  Ninty fans pointed to it when trying to stave off Wii haters.  I used to see it cited a lot on this site.

Yup, and it's especially sad considering that signs of this game being bad were so obvious. Everytime a third party Wii game got hyped by people who do not like Nintendo you just knew that something was going to go wrong. No More Heroes was ultimately junk and MadWorld was even worse.

Whoa whoa whoa no more heroes was one of the wiis best games. madworld was alright.

NMH isn't even one of the Wii's best third party games. It's style over substance from start to finish. The whole game is about fighting ten bosses with everything else just acting as boring filler. Just because a game is better than Boom Blox doesn't mean that it is actually good.

If a game is better than boomblox its just that. No more heroes for me was good from start to finish and most people who ive heard speak about it liked it.

This sums it up pretty nicely.

Edit:

Also, IGN is partly to blame. They did everything they could to overhype every damn mature Wii game...

Whoa friend, you come dangerously close to making it sound like a game almost completely about boss fights can't be good.  In this case you're probably right....but Team Ico is not pleased haha.

There are lots of games that have gained an unusual level of attention on forums for reasons other than matter to actual game quality or game sales. Often these games lack the factors which seem to be the most directly related to success; and those are being part of a successful series, developed by a team with a track record of success, in a very popular genre, and having strong marketing support from the publisher.

In the case of No More Heroes and Madworld you have new IPs in unconventional or unpopular genres developed by teams who have a history of producing niche games backed by a publisher who makes decisions based on anticipating mediocre sales. While the games are not "Bad" they were unpolished, lacked content, and used an rendering style that few games have been successful with.

Unfortunately, in both cases the games represent a "Seed" of a great game that is undeveloped because they (obviously) didn't have the resources to develop the game further.
