I don't know about you but I actually have real friends that have PSN accounts, and I would like to talk to my friends while just mindlessly playing games. If I was going to play a serious narritive game, like MGS4, then I wouldn't talk to them. And there's nothing forcing you to talk about the games your playing, why does it matter if your friend is playing COD and you're not, you can talk about anything.
When you join the PSN development team and program it.
well you can already talk in a chat room but cannot leave it, if they can put it in the background like Downloading and the XMB bar then yes they can do it
Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong
I was told by an employee at SCEJ that they worked on it but were not able to accomplish the task. That person also did coding work on the Vita which will have the feature.
The PS3 was not built with the allocated RAM resources to allow chat and games simultaneously... or something like that.
I am not lying about this.

Personally, when I play games, I like to focus on the game at hand so talking to my real life friends online is a distraction. As I said before, even if a game needs voice chat to get the full benefits (e.g Uncharted co-op) I still try to avoid it and try to use other means to communicate with people.

I totally agree, it's one thing to want to chat to the person you are playing co-op with or team mates in a multiplayer game but otherwise I have no interest in chatting whilst playing a game. If I want to talk to someone I will use a phone and give them my full attention.
I dont think it matters on PS3,the problem lies with hardly anybody talks on PSN there seems to be a total lack of community that you get on XBOX LIVE,thats why i always get MP games for xbox ,maybe if they included a mic from the start it would be better ,but i doubt it going by the replys saying i never speak thats the problem right there.

All of my 20 PSN friends are real life friends. Multiple of them I see daily... I can talk to them about those things over the phone through voice or text, facebook, or skype. Or how about this... they come over and play with me... Me and my friend just played through infamous 2 swapping every death or every few missions or so...
