Forums - Nintendo - DS tech question

My friend's bringing me a crimson and black DS Lite back from Japan. Their mains voltage is 100V and ours is 230V. She said that the higher voltage had broken her hair dryer and that it's common for Japanese products to break when plugged into a UK power supply. Does anyone know where I can get a gadget which will step down the voltage to 100V? Thanks!

Don't they all work on 5.2 volts?

You'll need an Euro AC adapter.

You won't have any problem, other electronics and such that have an internal power supply are designed to work on one voltage only... though my hair dryer and hair straightener can work on 220V and 110V :)

@fkusumot No idea :s

Does anyone else have a Japanese import? I've had a look on eBay and there are a few step down transformers. Has anyone had any experience with them?

@Fazz Does that mean I just need a socket convertor and don't need to worry about the voltage?

No, you must worry about the voltage, but the DS has an external power supply (the charger), so you can use one from an European DS.

This one should do the job http://cgi.ebay.com/Nintendo-DS-Lite-Universal-US-EU-AU-UK-Charger-Ship-24h_W0QQitemZ110209995343QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item110209995343

Brilliant, thanks

I've been playing with my lovely new DS and it ran out of power. So I put it on to charge with the charger Fazz recommended off eBay, and nothing's happening! The user guide says a light's supposed to come on while it's charging but I'm getting nothing.

The charger itself has a light on which indicates that electricity is entering it but it doesn't appear to be entering the DS battery. So either there's a fault with the charger or the DS itself.

Has anyone had this problem? I'll try to get over to my brother in law's to try his charger but until then does anyone have any suggestions?

My Japanese DS Lite wouldn't work with a travel adaptor here in Australia, it doesn't blow up though, the light flashes once on the DS but that's it, it wouldn't charge.

You need a step-down converter, mine cost a whopping $40 AUD, most good electronic stores will sell them, they aint cheap for what they are.

This is the exact sollution to your problem.

I'm using a different charger, not the Japanese one that came with it so I don't need a stepup. I'm using a UK charger and was told all DS Lites are the same so it's just the charger I needed to change.

Well, maybe all DS's are not the same, I'm not sure if my DS Lite charged on my ex's DS charger, I think it did though, so maybe it's your DS or you bought a faulty charger, I recommend you go into an Electric store with your DS and both your chargers and test the Step-Down Converter, that's what I did before paying for it.
