My Japanese DS Lite wouldn't work with a travel adaptor here in Australia, it doesn't blow up though, the light flashes once on the DS but that's it, it wouldn't charge.
You need a step-down converter, mine cost a whopping $40 AUD, most good electronic stores will sell them, they aint cheap for what they are.
This is the exact sollution to your problem.
