Forums - Sony - Will The Last Guardian profit?

The games been in the working since 2008 now, and there's still no signs of a real release date, definitely 2012 or later. So do you think the sales from the game in going to bring a profit, I'm assuming it'll need some decent sales to begin with which I'm a little sketchy over.

Maybe they found out quickly that the game wasn't possible for the current hardware and will continue development on the next gen hardwares. What we saw were pre-render screens.

Well, you have to remember that it's not just how long developers work on something, but how many people they have working on it. Team Ico is a relatively small team with 35 or so employees, if you compare that to something like Naughty Dog with 100+ you can see why they could take quite a while to finish up their game. I don't think Sony is going to make out like gang busters, but I doubt they'll lose much if any.

@Galaki, the game has been played in front of media for a few magazines so it isn't as though the E3 stuff is the only thing that has been showed. Also depending on what you mean by pre-rendered I don't think you're even right on that end, unless you just mean it wasn't a demo played in front of the audience like Uncharted 3 then yes you are right, but again the game has been played in front of people so I doubt they'll change hardware.

Are you pretending you don't know of the kind of posts Galaki makes? Or are you doing a double joke kinda thing where you reply seriously to a jokey sarcastic post?

@OP

You would assosciate a product that will be the purest form of art with something as evil as profit?!??!

I only give a couple users the benefit of the doubt and assume most anything obviously wrong they say is said in jest, Galaki is not one of them.

Yes, the kind of playable demo that you actually see the game... played. All I've seen so far are just pre-render videos.

So, 2 conclusions. The game is not profitable to the publisher's view or the game is not possible on the current hardware. (Not specifically pointing at PS3. Just current home consoles in general.)

The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection will help them making profit. (like GT5Prologe did for Polyphony Digital)

Even though Team Ico is a small developer, their games don't appeal the masses and don't sell that much, 1-2 million, so if they make a profit it will be quite a small amount.

And their last new game, Shadow of the Colossus, was launched in 2005, that makes 6 years to launch a new game and counting, thus increasing the costs of The Last Guardian.

But I already told you it's been playable in front of media....are we ignoring that bit?  Also what was shown was gameplay and not CG so the game is playable even if they spliced together gameplay snippents instead of just playing it outright.
