Forums - Gaming - Is the videogame industry at risk of being bored to death?

I don't understand the title, but as long as the industry keeps fucking up with gamers, they are doomed to die.

Above: still the best game of the year.

in decline???? there never has been that many gamers on the globe where are your facts..... now that big bucks game is decline maybe but still I'd like to see facts....... and that would only end up 2 ways either like the music industry.... that we'll have more and more over priced crap thrown really hard at our face........ or it will end up by a big purge and only quality games will get dev budgets......

Decline is already happening in japan and only grew this generation due to wii and ds. Also most growth comes from more markets opening like the middle east.

But this video tell wonderfully

I work for Atari and we are trying to spread the news about this but since they don't believe us we will just take over the market as soon as all 3 console manufactures  drop out

I am a great person and deserve great things like taking over whole countries and I believe raccoons are thieves >:( I wrote that in 3 seconds

A myth that is being furthered by the popularity of the Sly Cooper series!  I happen to know a racoon personally and all he wants to do is feed his family and work hard.  Bastard stole my lawnmower once but it's okay.  He brought it back with a full tank of gas.

The video speaks the truth (My ass was kicked by that video in a debate, before.....) but you do whip it out a lot.

there will be another gaming crash soon, dunno when though

It's a definite issue, although hardly uncommon - arguably both the music and film industries, particularly in US, have faced the same issue of a huge swing to demographically driven, narrow genre "more of the same but different" titles.

It could lead to some nasty crashes at some point if the market simply hits saturation of big titles - then just as with films you'll see some big failures and some real panic set in.

But so long as there's an avenue to market for less costly, more adventurous titles - and of course a market for them - then it'll work itself out over time.

On a personal note my tastes have swung away from the supposed AAA titles - I doubt I'll be getting MW3 in a rush for example - and to either newer franchises that still seem to have fresh ideas or smaller, indie or digital titles. For example the single game I'm most interested right now is the PSN title The Journey, very much looking forward to trying it.

It's worth remembering that the truth is there simply are more people looking for another meal of more of the same than those looking for something new and fresh and willing to risk some disappointment - that dictates a lot of the issues you mention as it drives the market that then drives businesses towards low risk approaches.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

So long as there is an interest in games, there will be a market.  There may be an ending to a large number of studois, EA could go under and so on.  However, I do believe now, unlike the Crash of the 1980s, videogames are established as part of people's lifestyles.  Portable devices stand to pick up interest, and Indie developers will still plug away.  People may end up buying more board and card game stuff also.  Just, I wouldn't bank on a lot of L.A Noire projects happening during this phase.  Can see a lot of free to play, and upgrade later, which means NO big teams developing.

What IS happening is that genres are dying.  The music game genre is dead now.  You have stuff like Dance Central and Just Dance.  Key will also possibly be on hit seasonable fads that are new and capture an under-developed marketspace.  Thing about games is that they aren't like other things out there.  You don't see them like cars and so on.  Done right, people will keep playing them.  Also, people seek novelty to.  When people get bored of a genre, they move on to other things.  This is particularly true with fad genres.

I thought that the game market was going up?(Sales wise compared to last Gen)

Blame the western developers for bringing in this type of game design model. Blame for Japan for blindly following it and cementing it as a defacto.

I have been saying the way games are developed nowadays is a disaster, tons and tons of problems with it

- Way to long development cycles
- Cuts down on creativity as nobody is willing to give a big budget to a unproven idea
- Tons and tons of "Me too" and Copy cat games
- Destruction or weakening of smaller developers
- Stupider games as because they are constantly playing the same shit they have no way of broadening there horizons and learnigf to appreciate differnt styles of games not just the hollywood cinematic shooter shit.

I cant take this gen any more.. Ihave played drastically less games then previous gens.

Spot on. It's funny when I was reminiscing about the PS1 and PS2 days, the games on those systems alone were much better than the majority of what is released now. That's why The Last Guardian and Versus 13 for example are a must! Not to say that there aren't gems this egenration (Uncharted, Gears of War, etc.) but overall most new games are starting to bore me (F.E.A.R 3, Hunted, etc.) and I had not experienced that feeling until recently.

I believe that one of the problems is the technology. As a company, you must sell what the market can pay for (i.e. Wii), instead of push the market to buy something that in the end, the company can't afford without losses.

Some devs and hardware manufacturers have great long plans, but the market is changing. For example, I believe that in 2006 the right tech was Wii. Now, the market has changed and is ready to pay for better tech like 360 or PS3. That's why Nintendo is releasing something like Wii U.

Furthermore, Nintendo has stated that HD development now has reached a more affordable cost and time investment, telling to investors that the Zelda demo was made by the Zelda team relative fast, so they don't have anything to worry about it.

At least is what I think.
