everyone saying how Ninty messed up with the 3DS advertisment, how are they supposed to advertise it??? THe main draw for the system is the 3D which cant be shown on tv, so its already an uphill battle. They put it in Walmarts and other big stores which was a good move, but IMHO maybe people are not that impressed by the effect. Redesign??? How, the DS had one of the best designs for a portable ever, if not the best. How would you redesign it and still have an analog and a 2nd screen that makes sense to use???

Well there are a few 3D channels out there, they could atleast put adverts made specifically for those out. But you are right, the required infrastructure just isn't there to effectively advertise it but if it were then its USP wouldn't exist either so they kind of shot themselves in the foot a little bit there din't they.

Although, I completely agree that Nintendo needs to advertise the 3DS as a new platform. Even my entire family who I showed it to thought it was just another DS, even when I showed them the 3D. "So it's a DS with 3D?" |
Compare that to sales of the 3DS in Japan when OOT released
Japan approx 40,000
America approx 44,000 (couldn't even surpass the DS)
approx: 166,000 to 215,000 isn't something to brag about.
America is Nintendo's strongest region yet only surpasses Japan 3DS sales by 4,000 and 49,000 in software.

It requires imagination to build a great tv ad that really showcases it's 3D ability. Having things 'pop out' of the screen, and someone fitting their head inside the 3D screen to view a wide open view. @oinyide So you expect Nintendo to forever use the DS design? You lack imagination if you think there is no way to redesign it. Sliding instead of opening. One could also redesign it so when closed the 3D screen is protected. Nintendo has great minds that work with them, I'm sure they could think of an awesome design for it. Because like many before, my own family thinks its a DS with 3D at a higher 250 price tag.

i'm not sure if it would be cost effective or not but in the previews of a 3D movie. 1) you could actually show off the 3D in that setting 2) the audience is obviously interested in 3D already 3) especially once the 3D movie store launches they could really push the "bring this experience home without glasses and for cheap" angle.
that's the first place i'd think to advertise at least.

It's stupid, you can't expect kowen to be on 24/7 |
Yep. And I'm sure he also wasn't on 24/7 when he did posted the numbers. ;)
so 3DS doesn't sell the most in any region but is the bestselling portable WW... that's a little odd.
MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Yeah, it isn't anything to brag about, but you just said in general it didn't sell as well, so I took it more literally.
OoT 3D is a remake/port. I'm not surprised it only sold so much hardware in the US, especially given that it's on the 3DS. Not only that, but a lot of Zelda fans could already own a 3DS in the US once they knew about Ocarina of Time (but this is obviously just a theory). Japan also got a bigger boost than I thought from OoT 3D, which to me explains the similar boosts. Japan is mostly back to normal, too. OoT may have a longer lasting affect for 3DS sales in the US than it did in Japan.
In terms of software sales, Japan and US were both apparently running out of stock in a lot of places (and Japan didn't recover with restocks until after its 2nd week). We'll see how the game legs out in both regions from here on out.
