Forums - Sony - New PS3 CECH3000 Dissected...Less Power Consumption, No LEDs, Smaller Fan

After being outed last week the new CECH-3000 PS3 model has had a tear down - showing off a revised interior - and has undergone a test to reveal slightly lower power consumption for the new SKU.

A power consumption test done by PocketNews has measured power consumption as being slightly reduced on the new SKU. This is not to be confused with the reduction in the size of the PSU from 230w to 200w like many other sites have done. When idle on the XMB the new 3000 unit draws 61w compared to 65w of the 2500 model.

Similar small savings in power are also found in-game with consumption when playing Final Fantasy XIII being rated at 72-79W for the 3000 model against 73-80w against the 2500 model, no surprise really given that it appears that they are both running the same fabrication process for both CPU and GPU carrying the same 45nm/40nm size for the Cell and the RSX, respectively.

Aesthetic changes to the console are few, with the glossy sides and rough top remaining on the console. The PS logo on the machine is now flush and matte, and the Sony logo is now recessed and black. Moreover, along with the removal of the LED eject and power lights the wireless LAN LED has also been removed.

Further changes are to be found internally with a new 80mm fan, down in size from the 120mm of the previous slim. With this decrease in fan size there is the potential for the new slim to be louder since it seems neither Cell nor RSX have shrunk down, and as you'll see later in the article the heatsink has also been changed to a lesser design.

When comparing the new board with the one previous, weight savings have come from Blu-ray/WiFi side of things, with the weight of the PSU remaining unchanged according to PocketNews. Moreover, around 220 grams were saved with the two metal shields surrounding the main board, the heatsink, and the fan motor.

Also shown were new heat sink designs for the RSX and the Cell which don't look as sophisticated as the heatsink on the previous model seen here and here, which as mentioned earlier could lead to increased noise alongside the smaller fan.

damn doesnt look like much of an upgrade i dont think they would of striped it down this much for only a $50 cut

Umm... What's the point of removing LEDs? They aren't there just for fun after all.

extreme way of cutting productions cut costs

yeah there useful during the night kinda made up for the removal of the touch sensitive buttons the fats had, and to till if your ps3 is on if your tv is on another source i guess now they have to rely on the noise the console makes or the HDD light

Looks some only very minor changes. $50 cut is expected, and since the Cell/RSX wasn't reduced in size they can't really do much more to save money yet. $100 cut would make them lose money again on each console sold.

So it's worse than the current "Slim" model?
They removed the Wireless LED... which I use when I see that a download is taking forever, when the trophies take long to sync, etc, to see if the LED is blinking. If it is then I know that I didn't lose connection and that my internet is just slow. If it isn't then I know I lost connection so I go and unplug/plug my modem and router again. I know there are error messages too, but they only appear for a few seconds and if I wasn't looking at my PS3 when the error message appeared, the only way to realize that I lost connection is to look at the wireless light.

Also, they went for a worse heatsink? that would make the system run hotter because of worse heat dissipation, right?

And they replaced the 120mm fan for a 80mm fan? that means the new fan will need to run at a higher RPM to be able to cool the PS3 down as much as the 120mm fan would at a lower RPM... which means this new "Slim" will be louder...

So the PS3 will run hotter than the current "Slim", will run louder more often and won't have the wireless light...

Well... at least it weighs less and consumes around 4w less... lol. It will also cost less to produce for Sony... and maybe will come with a price cut.

They should've really shrunk the RSX and CELL but I think they'll do that next year.

If I didn't have a PS3, I'd buy one now or wait until they shrink the chips. I wouldn't buy the CECH3000 model... but this is just my personal opinion... if someone wants to wait for this model to get a PS3 they should do it. It will probably come with a price cut so it could be worth it.

Release Final Fantasy Versus XIII nowwwwwwwwww!!! lol :P

What is this crap? It's a downgrade, by all means.
*pats fat PS3, you are the best*

I like the LEDs and its seems like a bad decision to decrease its capability of removing heat when the main heat producers are unchanged.

I'm betting we'll see some heat issues on these new machines.

If you're buying a new PS3, do it now to get the 2500.

This definitely sets up a $50 price cut a Gamescom, but no CPU/GPU shrink with a smaller fan? I know the heat sink got smaller but i think it'll definitely be a hotter/noisier system overall.

More RPM on fan.

That will just make for more noise.

Ah i see, so it should keep it cool. Thanks.
