Forums - Sales - XBOX 360/PS3 both desperatly need pricecuts in order to keep with the Wii.

Yeah PS360 needs a price cut.

But no... not because the Wii... Wii is selling 30% down this year and the PS3 outsold Wii by 600k or more.

Correction

Wii average selling price $157

Xbox 360 average selling price $269

PS3 average selling price $314

at least in the only place that actually tracks average selling prices. Don't try and make the ps3 look infinitly more expencive then the competition. The average xbox sells for less then $50 less.  http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6409/npd_behind_the_numbers_may_2011.php?print=1

And no the other two consoles are doing fine against the wii.

Last week the wii fell 21% while the ps3 and 360 fell only 8%.

This week the wii looks like it will fall 5% while the 360 will be flat, and the ps3 will actually be up. The 360 and ps3 don't need to beat the wii as long as they are approaching wii numbers before they even get pricecuts they will be fine.

360 will have a very poor YoY comparison in the next week or 2.  I believe the 360 slim was released in the middle of June 2010.  M$ won't be able to come close to their 2010 number from here on out without a price-cut.  That is the kind of stuff investors look at.  Kinect has also stalled-- it has dragged behind Wii Fit for some time now.  Kinect is approaching sub 40k WW numbers.  The new debut software for Kinect didn't do very well, Wipe-out and Child of Eden.  Wipeout was a big success for Wii-- it will probably sell 1 million eventually, so I wonder if Kinect is capable of selling casual games in the same way that Wii did.  M$ is betting a big part of their farm on the future of Kinect, it will be interesting to see how that future pans out.  Price cuts are the only way now for M$ to stay consistent with 2010 sales-- as both the Slim and the Kinect effect produced a huge 2010 boost in sales that year.

As for PS3, I would have to look at the 2010 numbers a little more before commenting further.

Most anticipated games of 2011:

Uncharted 3,Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Rocksmith

Modern Warfare 3, Super Mario 3D

If I see the chartz I think it is the 3DS that needs a pricecut. The HD consoles are not selling horrible numbers.

June 4th total year to date data:

Xbox 360: Up ~16.7% from 2010

Sure doesn't sound like this needs a price cut.

PS3: Down ~8.6% from 2010

This is defiantly down some, but it isn't in desperate need of a price cut. Current rumors suggest that a price cut may accompany the revised PS3 that may come out later this year.

Wii: Down ~37.9% from 2010

This is why the Wii needed a price cut so desperately. It's sales have been dismal to say the least so far this year.

**Percentages were obtained by taking this years number and dividing by past years number.

Don't forget it has Kinect and a Slim model this year over last, and PS3 has Move and loads of games and they're still fairly flat. Soon, they'll both be heavily down (heck, 360 was nearly 60% this week...soon it will be down too...)

I'm not saying it's nearly as bad as the Wii's situation, but wait too long and it will be.

PS3 and 360 are projected to be up YoY.

Do they have to keep up, they've been above wii for most of this year about time wii is on top for a while.

Yeah cos it totally deserves it with all the new SW it's providing its customers

PS3 is nearly confirmed to be getting a price cut in August, at least in Europe. Question is really about Microsoft - they're lapping the Slim / Kinect now and can't match those figures without a cut. Whats interesting is there isn't a ton of content this late in the generation with bases over 50m that can push much hardware, so I'm starting to really doubt this will be a huge Christmas for anyone / anything. Kinect had dancing and fitness games last year, Call of Duty / Battlefield will do huge numbers  but probably not push much hardware. Hell Vita might even be the 'hot' thing and damage the consoles a bit.

I would wait a little bit longer if I were Sony or Microsoft.

Sony should Price Cut PS3 to $250 in Late August 2011.

Microsoft should Price Cut the 360 to $250 and $150 in Early October 2011 as well as Price Cut Kinect to $120 the same week.

No need to cut too early, as HD twins sales are on the slow side, but still decent. Much better to cut in mid Q3, to have the effects of the lower price at their best during Autumn and Xmas. Giving up a modest Summer boost can give a much bigger one in return in the strongest season.

No you have the numbers wrong.

PS3 299-399

X360 199-399

Wii 149

OT: I hope you realize the Wii will continue to drop quite a bit...it may still end up selling the most every week but after a month or so it won't be by much.

Both the 360 and PS3 are selling ok and making a profit.

So the wii gets a nice pricecut and sells more then the other consoles for 3 weeks and all of a sudden the others are doomed? That way of thinking is so severely flawed.
