Forums - Sales - Could PS VITA OUTSELL 3DS In Lifetime Sales? Or Will Nintendo Keep Its IRON GRIP On the Handheld Market?!

Who will win the handheld gaming system battle?

Playstation Vita 135 36.68%

Nintendo 3DS 212 57.61%

Nintendo will win the bat... 13 3.53%

SONY will win the battle,... 8 2.17%

Total:368

Personally I'd like them both to do well; long live dedicated game hand-helds, I say.

The thing is, as much as I love the Uncharted series, for example, I'm probably more excited by the idea that it can be achieved on Vita than I am to actually experience it on there. And while my opinion may well change once Irrational's Bioshock project reveals itself, all of the rest of the games announced for the Vita so far put together don't match my desire to play Mario Kart and Super Mario 3DS alone. Then factor in things like RE: Revelations and the prospects of a Metroid and 2D Mario and the 3DS' library has me more interested than PSV's, despite its superior tech, beautiful screen and dual analogue.

As far as which will prove more successful in the market, I have to admit that the PSV's price is very attractive, but while 3DS is still $250 right now, price drops would be no problem for it at all if it came to that, as it only costs Nintendo around $100 to make. I don't see Vita having that option any time soon. I'd go with 3DS as the victor.

No, the best the Vita can do is sustain itself and make a nice profit for Sony, but I doubt it's going to beat anyone. If Nintendo get desperate then they could easily drop the price down to $150, re-design the console, release some Mario game and then ride on that for a while. If that doesn't work, then maybe.

it will unfortunatly.

Then it's a good thing for you that Nintendo won't do those things. Nintendo will continue to act stupid, the 3DS will keep struggling and from there third party support starts snowballing into Sony's favor. By the time Nintendo realizes that they messed up, it will be too late.

Well, this scenario still requires Sony to not mess up on their end, because if they struggle just as much or more with the PS Vita, then third parties will be less inclined to jump ship. But basically, the longer it takes Nintendo to get their act together, the bigger Sony's chances get. I wish I could say that Nintendo will take the victory home easily, but I am afraid I can't.

I wish it was a good thing for me.

It is, because IGN will write editorials about the 3DS struggle and you love posting their negative Nintendo stuff.

To address previous statements in this thread.

ND+C is NOT a failure, its the best selling 3DS title, but it is clearly moving slowly considering the price of the 3DS right now.

Secondly, it is certainly not appealing to the casual market now, hence the slow pick up of ND+C, and many other games, but we know there's a reason for this, its Apple.

The question I think is whether Sony can hang on to their original PSP marketshare, if Nintendo make a significant move back into hardcore gamer territory. This is already taking place, but as of now, we don't know how effective it will be a year from now.

Bring on Kid Icarus!!

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

If Sony really wants to beat 3DS, they need to reach out to the mass market and make games that appeal to them like Nintendo did with the DS, and I see no signs of them doing this right now. But at the same time, Nintendo isn't really either. So it'll be a much closer race than the DS vs PSP race, and I think Vita will actually take Japan.

But overall, I still think Nintendo's experience in the handheld market, the large amount of third party support, the strength of their American market, and the head start, will be too much for Sony to overcome.

While I don't see 3DS ever having the buzz DS had, when those big hitters come it should sell the platform, Vita simply doesn't have any of those.

That said Nintendogs + Cats has bombed hasn't it? Or is it a leggy kind of franchise?

the original nintendogs sold 2.6 million in 10 weeks.. nintendogs + cats sold 470k in 10 weeks.

As it is a leggy franchise and as Nintendogs + Cats has been released on a userbase with less systems sold compared to the amount of DS' sold when Nintendogs launched we'll have to wait a bit longer to decide. But the sales are disappointing considering its the next iteration of a friggin 24 million copies selling game!

@ OP - I take it you haven't seen the 3DS xmas lineup? Maybe you should go read up about it.

At best, Vita will do 20% higher than the PSP, and at worst, the 3DS will be 20% down from the DS. There is no way that Vita will outsell the 3DS

the battle is ~50/50 to nintendo but apple wins the war.

I hope the vita wins. It is a better a console. The 3d on the 3ds is just a gimmick.

I was pretty excited about the vita...

Until i saw the game lineup.

Both won't impress.
