Yakuza Of the End ships 400,000 units; series tops five million

Zombies and gun shooting are new elements in Yakuza: Of the End.

Yakuza Of the End started off a bit slower than its predecessors, but Sega appears to be happy with the results so far. The company announced today that shipments of the zombie-themed twist on the franchise have topped the 400,000 mark, just two weeks after release. Additionally, Sega said that the worldwide shipment figure for the full Yakuza series has topped the 5 million mark.

The first Yakuza game was released on the PlayStation 2 in December 2005. Together with its budget re-release, it sold one million units.

Sega followed with Yakuza 2 on the PlayStation 2 in December 2006, the samurai-themed offshoot Yakuza Kenzan for PlayStation 3 in March 2008, Yakuza 3 for PlayStation 3 in February 2009, and Yakuza 4 for PlayStation 3 in March 2010. PSP saw Black Panther Yakuza New Chapter in September 2010.

Of the End is a dramatic departure for the series. Although it has the same characters, the story surrounds a zombie attack and destruction of the neon city of Kamurocho. Gameplay now focuses on gun shooting in addition to the hand-to-hand combat of past titles.

The game was originally due for release on March 17, but was delayed following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Following its release on June 9, the game topped Media Create's weekly sales charts, with nearly 300,000 units, a bit lower than Yakuza 4's 384,000 and Yakuza 3's 372,000.

The Yakuza games really are great, I wonder how profitable they are for SEGA, how many copies do they have to sell to make a profit back?

For they make so many games(especially for PS3), i think 0.30m is already profitable.

One of the best and underrated game series i've ever played. I hope Yakuza of the End makes it to the west.

You forgot to add the PSP title.

Kurohyou: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinshou (PSP): 0.29m

The first Yakuza title is a bit undertracked, it should be around 0.90m

Number might be lower this week, since they sold 50k more. So 0.6M on sheleves or undertracked. Really the first one is most likely undertracked by 100k-300k.
