When the GC stops selling add two years to when the PS2 will stop.

Is nintendo even manufacturing game cubes anymore? With the success of the Wii I doubt they need to. If Sony actually made money out of the black hole called the PS3 they wouldn't make PS2's either, but I think it's their only profitable video game hardware right now.

Can you be more wrong? Why would they stop making PS2 when it sells?

I hope when they do stop producing it they reintroduce backwards compatability on the PS3 in the PAL territories. I never got round to getting a PS2 and when I get a PS3 I'd like to have the option of checking out some of its best games.

after 2008 xmas

Wrong about what? I said they are probabally making PS2's and will continue to do so since the PS3 looses them so much money.

I also said I doubt Nintendo is making GameCubes anymore since the Wii is so popular.

Where am I wrong?

Next Christmas is last big Christmas for PS2 but it will be many years before it dies completely.

So is it entirely possible for the PS3 to NOT have a 10 year plan (many say Sony is stupid, and the next gen will be in 5 years)....seeing how UNINTENTIONALLY, the PS2 may last that long.

But at the topic, it'll stop selling when they stop production.....even by 2009 when the PS3 library is great, and all support has shifted from PS2 to it, there's still a 5000+ library of games to play, and unless there are no more PS2s being made, then they will still sell

There is nothing unintentional about the PS2's longevity.  It is the success of the PS2 that has made Sony proclaim that the PS3 will be a viable format for ten years.  It is the crux of Sony's woes: hubris.  Like a world class fighter who has dominated the ring for so long, they strutted and flexed, letting everyone see how mighty they were.  Of course, some scrappy kid (or old man) entered the ring and knocked Sony out in the first round and now they get up with glassy eyes and stars over their heads still posing for the cameras and holding their hands high while the ref checks to see if they haven't suffered major head trauma.

Sony knows the PS2 is selling.  The PS2 is still funding the future of the PS3 and Blu-Ray.  I think they will continue PS2 production until there's no milk left in the cow.  Especially considering that Sony has removed backwards compatibility from the PS3 I wouldn't be surprised to see the PS2 always in contention this generation.  If it's at 120 million right now...don't be surprised to see it hit 135-140.

All the companies want their respective systems to be successful, however, I doubt that back in 2000, Sony was telling themselves "the PS2 will last until 2010". That's why I said "unintentionally".

Currently playing:

Unreal Tournament 3, Warhawk, Rock Band, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII, DMC2, then 3, and Radiata Stories

"Stop the presses// It's been a while but I'm back in session// And in the past time my flow's matured more than adolescence// It's time to learn a lesson// So get you pen and your pad out, listen close, and take heed to this blessing"

btw, if the PS2 was funding the future of the PS3 and blu-ray, its doing a poor job, because the PS2 is not taking their games division and doing anything.

Well, it may be that the losses would be worse without the profits from the PS2, but it has not been nearly enough to erase nearly a billion dollars in losses in one quarter, and what will likely be greater losses for the next quarter (due in-part to the abysmal software sales this holiday, and the pricecuts on exsisting stock and future systems).

If the PS3 were doing better than it is now, I would have said PS2 had 6 months left in it. However, since it's being used as a crutch right now, I'd say it's got about 1.5 years left.

i predict 2009, i also predict a PS2 price cut in 2008

I think this was the last great year of the PS2. It will continue to sell through this year but steadily tapering off untill it falls below the radar, but continue to be produced for at least 2 more years.
