Especially if your sound is connected through something other than that HDMI cable, it's probably a cable problem.

They're not expensive, so try replacing it.

I do not have a PS3 but I have had a similar issue with a HDMI cable on another device that randomly declared the HDMI cable to not be compatible this was made worse by some wiggling so maybe check the HDMI cable itself out would be my thought.
