Well it's already been almost 5 years, so saying it'll last 5 more years isn't unreasonable. It's got at least a couple more years till the PS4 comes, and it'll last a couple years alongside the PS4 before it dies. Just like the PS2 is doing right now.

Apart from the name, and the name of the manufacturer, name a similarity between PS2 and PS3

A strong lineup and sales that increase year after year.

Its only the most normal thing that the PS3 will have a 10 year lifecycle, PS3 is not even at the magical pricepoint of 199$ in the developped part of the world. After a couple of years, PS3 will start to sell in developping nations. Grand scheme of Sony just like the PS1 and PS2.

10 year lifespan only means the system will sell for 10 years. It doesn't mean it won't be replaced for 10 years. If PS4 is released in 2013, PS3 can hold at least 2 years.

Actually you're right, there is a pretty big difference between them. Here's one of the bigger differences. PS2 peaked in its 2nd year, PS3 is peaking in its 5th.

I'm not sure how you're working things out, are you taking the launch date as the start of the year, as opposed to looking at calendar years?

Anyway, going off calendar years, the PS2 peaked in its 3rd year, and the PS3 peaked in its 5th year and has started the downwards slope.

I was talking about full calendar years. 2000 wouldn't be considered PS2's first year because the only place it was available for more than 2 months in 2000 was Japan, and obviously I'm not counting 2006 for PS3 either.  PS3 will clearly be up on last year with it only being relatively marginally down on last year ATM with a price cut to come in the next few months. And in regards to 3rd party support, PS2 hasn't had a major 3rd party release in 3 years. Wii, despite the fact that most people lament it's lack of 3rd party support, will most likely be discontinued not to long after its last major 3rd party release (DQX).

Great games, new movie formats/playback (DVD was new back when PS2 came out, Blu-ray was new when PS3 came out), they're both black.

There's 3. What was your point?

I think I'm going to get a PS3. My Wii is starting to bore me, and there are not many good hardcore games on the Wii. I was at Best Buy recently, and I played a Infamous 2 demo, and it was amazing! I was seeing all these great games that I had seen but never played, like Assassins Creed 1 and 2 for very low prices, and then I saw Bioshock 2 on clearance at Target for 4 dollars. I would never have imagined seeing a PS3 game like that for 4 dollars.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

well u can see it, as i'll still be on mine in 10 yr's!

i think 15yr's should do both PS2 and PS3 very well in the long run as PS2 may hit the unthinkable 200m sold ww.
and as for PS3 in its 10th yr maybe 80-95m?

PS2 won't hit 200 million. Sony are only projecting 4 million this year (Although they'll probably surpass that by about a million most likely). I'd say 160 or maybe 165 million is the most likely end point.

The PS3 is the most likely to last that long. It is still at $300 and will be at least until the 360's price drops. Also unlike Nintendo (developer) and Microsoft (software producer) Sony has the manufacturing and distribution resources to continue to produce a last gen console with little opportunity cost because it is an electronics manufacturer by trade.

Without a doubt it can last that long
