Forums - Gaming - Piracy

Piracy is a thing that we, gamers, should stop if we can.

Piracy ruins the console software sales and can minimize profit of the company that makes the games, discouraging them to develop games for that console.

We should do our best to stop piracy.

If you want prof look at the PSP software sales.

I don't pirate games. I think it's dishonest.

At the same time every study on the matter shows that piracy doesn't actually effect sales.

PSP software doesn't sell because the PSP doesn't appeal to people who don't pirate software.

If the PSP wasn't eaisly piratable people in large just wouldn't buy it. The Software sales would stay about the same but the hardware sales would drop drastically.

Piracy is what made the PSP Nintendo's best competition in the hand held market to date. It was actually a very smart strategy.

Next generation sony can make an unpiratable PSP2 that will have plenty of name brand success.

That's why Ipods are so popular. If Ipod music wasn't so easy to pirate people would just buy less ipods they wouldn't pay money for it. They've done a study on that as well. They said it was likely Ipod sales would drop by 75%.

I hate piracy.

My mate Martin is really bad for it, he buys copied dvds for £3 each, he doesnt even consider that you can get a real dvd for £3 of a classic movie thats good quality.
But he does it for everything, including games.

oh and his excuse is that Corporations make too much money, and they need to have business taken off them by pirate competition, which is crap.

I'm no better though, I used to buy copied PS1 games, but I was also 8 and money is tight for a 8 year old

Who pays for pirated movies?  Doesn't that defeat the purpose of pirating?

Anyway, I don't think piracy is ok, and if you think you're "sticking it to the man" by pirating, I can go into a huge debate with whoever wants it...I'm pretty sure if you're a logical human, you can't explain yourself.

Although, I'll admit with music and sometimes movies, I don't have a huge problem with it. I'm not trying to "stick it to the man," I just want to listen to some good music or watch a movie without throwing twenties away. I still use Netflix and go to movies in theaters.  But for games, sales are very important, 100,000 (not a lot) sales can sometimesreally tip the scale as to whether or not a game will get a sequel, etc.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

Its pointless to complain about this sort of thing since its intrinsic to the industry, just like it is in music, movies and software. Complain all you want but it doesn't make a difference.

I'm asking for what you think the impact for piracy in video games.

I might be complaining a little.

I think martin prefers something tangeble, that's why he doesn't download them.
Trust me I have had this arguement with him 100 times and he always assumes he has won when he has just had a right grilling.
