Okay... this I don't get.  I mean, I'm a big fan of TK's support of Vita, but I feel like it quite often gets overstated compared to what Sony are offering.

Tecmo Koei's support of Vita has been a load of ports (Atelier; Dead or Alive; Ninja Gaiden) and then a load of multi-plats with PS3 or PSP (Deception IV; Toukiden; Warriors).

Sony's support of Vita has been a load of ports (Borderlands; God of War; Ratchet) and then a load of multi-plats with PS3 (BigFest; Helldivers; Counterspy).  And then a few exclusive games at least for the current year (Freedom Wars; Murasaki Baby; PS Vita Pets; Soul Sacrifice Delta)

What's the difference there?  Apart from TK maybe being more likely to release their multi-plats as a retail game (though the latest batch of Warriors games would say not), I'd say that was pretty equal.  They've both got equally barren upcoming release schedules (Atelier and Toukiden in the west from TK; Oreshika from Sony).

The problem is that Sony should be supporting it more because it's their platform, but I'd definitely argue that they're supporting it the same as TK.

I am worried that Japan Studio support is going to be completely dropped in favor of PS4 though.  Which is an odd, odd move to bet all their chips on something that may or may not take off rather than something that they've spent 2 years salvaging themselves (and especially since I'd bet PS4 will get stronger Japanese third-party support just because of the western sales).

That's true enough. I'd forgotten that Toukiden was also on PSP, and I suppose I weight any third party support a lot more than Sony (barely) supporting its own system. And at least in my experience, Koei's ports are done with a lot more care than Sony's, some of which have been utterly shameful. Maybe it's just a matter of simple PR: Koei's "Good news, Vita fans! Atelier Orororolalala Plus is coming to the west!" vs. Sony's (read: Fergal Gara or John Koeller's) constant "wel u can lyk play cod via remoat play, m8" bullshit.

Anyway, I guess I'm mostly talking about SCEJ here (which, granted, is not a terribly productive branch anyway). I can understand SCEA and SCEE being quick to write off the Vita, but SCEJ is hugely frustrating for me since I reckon it's really the PSP's success in Japan that precipitated the development of the Vita in the first place, but then they went on to do rather little for it on the software side and, in one of the biggest fuck-ups in the history of fuck-ups, let Monster Hunter get away from them entirely. I'll give them credit for making their few games really impressive, and by all accounts Freedom Wars fits that mold, but it's really a shame that I've never before had to worry about whether or not a Sony platform is going to be supported until now. For as much as they like to blather on about the market changing, while that is true to some extent, I think the more pertinent factor is that Sony suffocated the Vita in the crib with its own disinterest and lack of vision.

Freedom Wars arrives on PS Vita this Friday – check out the launch trailer

Japan Studio’s PS Vita action RPG gears up for launch with new footage

PlayStation fans, PS Vita aficionados and “sinners” around the world – the day you’ve been waiting for is nearly here! I’m extremely proud to welcome you to the world of Freedom Wars, which launches this week, exclusively on PS Vita and PlayStation TV.

Over the past few months it’s been my pleasure to share Freedom Wars trailers, screenshots, character art and information with you, and you’ve responded with nothing but pure excitement. That’s why I’m so thrilled to share one final trailer with you – one that’s never been seen before, and that I think sets the mood perfectly for what you’re about to experience. Check it out above.

But before you jump into the game, let me announce a few things that you might not be aware of:

Firstly, patch 1.20 will be available on launch day, so please make sure to update! This patch does several things, including:

  • The addition of the online eight-player PvP mode
  • The elimination of the online-pass requirement
  • General difficulty tweaks and balancing

I’m also happy to announce that we have several weeks of DLC planned for all of you, including free DLC every week until the end of November! Everything from weapon packs and hairstyle additions to battle music and sticker packs is on the way, so please keep checking back to download the latest content and keep your Sinner stylish!

But before I let you go to start working off that one million year sentence, I wanted to leave you with one final message from Junichi Yoshizawa, Producer of Freedom Wars from Japan Studio:

Hello everyone. This is Junichi Yoshizawa, producer on Freedom Wars.

We’ve finally reached the launch of Freedom Wars for Europe – thank you very much for all of your patience! I’m so happy that we’re finally able to get Freedom Wars into your hands!

Freedom Wars isn’t a game that’s just about defeating your enemies, it’s a game about “Reclamation” – saving your friends and civilians from the clutches of the enemies you face.

While you’re playing through the game, don’t forget the various cooperative and competitive modes that you can enjoy in Freedom Wars! The co-op mode will let you take on any Operation, whether it’s story-based or a specially timed “Redemption” Operation, with teammates via Ad-hoc or Online connections.

The latter half of the game can become a bit difficult, so please play with others in order to complete these Operations and finish the story!

I’d also like to share a little advice to those that are about to start the game. As you play, you’ll be able to gradually level-up the equipment of NPC characters you encounter throughout the story. From the “Window on Liberty” located within your cell, make sure to claim the “Comrade Loadout” entitlements for your fellow teammates – taking a well-leveled team with you into combat will drastically increase your chances of success!

There’s also ways to strengthen your Sinner by equipping “Augmentations”. As you proceed throughout the story, you’ll receive the ability to create these Augmentations – make sure to create and equip those that will be most helpful given the Operation you’re trying to complete!

I’ve already said a lot here, but I’m thrilled that we’re finally able to have our European fans experience Freedom Wars.

We created Freedom Wars with the hope that every PlayStation Vita or PlayStation TV owner will be able to enjoy it.

So please, enjoy the million year sentence-enforcing world, the reclamation-focused multiplayer, the League of Panopticons and the engaging storyline that make up Freedom Wars.

For the greater good!

So, the patch is dropping WW on Friday? I know they said soon after launch for the US.

"We'll toss the dice however they fall,
And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

Check out MyAnimeList and my Game Collection. Owner of the 5 millionth post.

I really don't think you should put the blame entirely on sony here. And what exactly are your expectations out of SCEJ, they have like 4 vita game releases this year, all the while having to support both the vita and ps4. Do you expect one game a month or something? Since when does sony have control over third parties? Third parties will release on whatever console they feel is more attractive financially.

I feel there are so many factors that prevented the vita from taking off that blaming it solely on lack of support from sony is a little shortsighted. These are some of the reasons imo. To be clear, I'm talking mostly about japan's side here since its still viable as a development platform and they can still break even.

1. Lack of long standing franchises that have universal appeal both in the west and east. Most of sony franchises are system sellers in specific regions, thus they have to do twice the work just to attract the same number of buyers as nintendo. Secondly, sony is more prone to producing new ips, as evidenced by Japan studio's output. It's just their strategy and its failing them.

2. Different demographic. They're tagetting two different age groups. The sales reflect the change in buying preference between the two, there's all there is to it. Handhelds are simply not a formfactor desirable by that audience anymore.

 3. Different markets. Not only is the target demographic different, the buying habits between the two cannot be anymore clear cut. Note that this is purely based on personal observations and should be treated as such. From what I see of the japan market, there's clearly a divide between how 3ds and vita owners spend their money. 3ds users will mostly buy nintendo franchisees and big names such as YW and MH. Other smaller to mid tier titles rarely do spectacularly. The western equivalent of stereotypical "casual gamers" that buy the next FIFA and COD.(This is for comparison sake. I'm not saying they exist.) On the other hand, vita owners spend their money more evenly among big names and niche titles, the definition of hardcore gamers. In the end, the Japanese market chose the former and hence the result.

 4. Sony's western first party games are too ambitious. No big publisher is willing to spend AAA budget on a handheld to sell numbers that are a portion of their console counterpart and at $20 cheaper than their console counterpart. How is such a market feasible and sustainable? No publisher is willing to step up and match consumer expectations that are way too high garnered by sony themselves. There is no wonder in how it failed in the west.

 5. And thus begin the domino effect. Vita sells terrible in the west. Naturally, big publishers in Japan that focuses on the international market is not going to support the vita. It's only natural that the vita could not succeed as 3ds does in japan.

So, in the end, which market is more important to you? I will always prefer the latter but the rest of the world prefers the former and soon Japan will follow. That said, having the best of both worlds is still the best and sadly neither Sony and Nintendo have that. But why are we even complaining? The vita market is STILL feasible in Japan. Otherwise, it wouldn't have the software output that it has. If you bother to count, vita has way more than the 3ds, multiplat or not. The only thing its missing are the few big publishers support. You can get another concole for that.

That's... a hell of a lot sooner than I expected.  Blimey.  I'm gonna wait a while to see if NISA pick it up!

I would agree with that, it's a shame.  Personally, I've always been a fan of the Atelier-level stuff on Sony platforms anyway, but that was supplemental to my enjoyment of other stuff.  On Vita, those games make up pretty much 90% of my gaming time, and it's a shame because the platform has the potential for a lot more.

The next year is going to be very interesting to watch.  I'm not expecting anything from SCEE or SCEA anymore, so any announcements are a bonus.  I'm not sure what I expect from SCEJ anymore though.  I don't think they've completely given up on it yet, but we'll have to see.

Hey, guess what guize:

Makai Shin Trillion isn't cancelled.  Just delayed to 2015.

I can live with that!

Now, just need Gust to announce that Chronos Materia is releasing in 2015...

This weird Kickstarter game has a Vita stretch goal that may be reachable.

Excited for freedom wars. But even if I buy it now, I won't be able to play until after my exams.

Enjoying Shinovi versus a lot more than I would expect. Just finished Hebijo's side of the story and now for Hanzo.
