Forums - Gaming Discussion - Do People Still Care About Exclusives?

So I just found out MGS is going completely Multiplat and all future Kojima productions projects will also be Multiplat....to be honest I was surprised how I reacted to the news. If this was 2008 I would have been livid a la FFXIII or MGS4 going to the 360 rumors, but now I just want to play good games and couldn't give two shits if a 3rd party makes a multiplat game. I used to think that 3rd party exclusive titles were what defined a Console's identity but Im starting to feel that it should be up to the 1st parties to do that. Just some food for thought and if anyone feels the same?

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Don't care, most of my fav games on PS3 are multiplat anyway.

I just don't like a previously exclusive title going multiplat as its not built from ground up to be multiplat and due to this delays and cuts need to be made to the game.

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

No matter what people say exclusives still rule the roost.

Games like the two Mario Galaxies, MGS4, Valkyrie Chronicles, Dragon Quest IX, Pokemon Black/White, SSBBrawl, Monster Hunter 3, etc are all exclusive and they are my favourite games this generation.

Exclusives are still important, they give reason to the console. If exclusives didn't exist, then I wouldn't have bothered with a 360 or a Wii and two companies out of three would probably disappear while one console rules the roost. It'd be the PS2 generation all over again.

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

People who still care about exlusives games are the same people who are fans to certain system/company.

I care.  Exclusives are what give one console an edge over another.  If that's not the case, you just have the same machine 3 times.  And because I like the ideas and plans of some companies over others, I would rather certain companies succeed since they make me happier.  That's where exlusives come in.

I care, but thats because the first party of Sony is spoiling the living hell out of us. I accept MGS going multi however. Read below to see why
--------------------------------

June 2008, MGS4 launches to the PS3. Sony fans get defensive, are we going to keep our beloved game on just our console?... 94 meta, GOTY 2008 (second.. behind LBP, shockingly LBP gets more awards).

After the years, we now found ourselves in june 2011 about 3 years later. If a MGS4 was announced which I believe is happening soon enough, itll release in like another year, making the MGS4 exclusitivity of the PS3 version last for a whopping 4 years.

Now you all know that a B E A S T of my status love MGS4. (LOL elpres)

Truth is, I believe its time... I believe its time to share the entire MGS saga. You see, we're pretty much having so many exclusives that losing MGS4 isn't really going to matter, not after this long. We needed the game when we were in deep shit, or well.. we lacked the blockbusters like Uncharted, LBP, Killzone, God of War, Gran Turismo, InFAMOUS, Resistance (2-3 well.. xD), Motorstorm (2-3 well xD), Twisted Metal, The last guardian sotc&ico collection, starhawk warhawk (started as a PSN game.. so..) and many many more...even games like Heavy Rain.

Bottom line is,

if you look at the exclusives that were released and can be considerd as .."acclaimed" with MY definition of exclusives obviously being:
Games that are only on ONE platform. Period. PC INCLUDED In this as a platform.

Then , out of the top of my head:

2008 =

PS3: MGS4, LBP, Resistance 2, Motorstorm Pacific rift, GT5:Prolouge

X360: Gears 2, Fable 2 (im afraid im having a hard time remembering anything else that merits my definition. I did however get my Xbox 360 in November 2008 so perhaps I wasnt as informed then).

Result: PS3 & Multiplaforms  (Fallout 3 etc) dominate the GOTY awards. PS3 starts picking up steem.

2009 =

PS3: Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, Infamous, Demons souls.

X360: Forza 3... , Halo 3 ODST? , Halo wars (I had my X360 for this entire year, and.. really, like I said, if its on PC, imma get it there)

Result: Total domination of the GOTY awards. Arguably the best year for Sony as KZ2 and Uncharted 2 were true blockbusters. Halo Wars & Halo 3 ODST.. not so much. Forza 3, sure I guess but no GOTY there.

2010=

PS3: God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain, M.A.G, Modnation Racers

X360: Halo Reach, Alan Wake

Result: Quite even between Sony & MS, where as Multiplats win mostly. Now if Mass Effect 2 was a exclusive that'd be a difference. It wasnt even a timed exclusive to me as I count the PC as a platform for gaming...

Now it gets interesting:

2011=

PS3: Killzone 3, LBP2, Infamous 2, Twisted Metal, Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, Motorstorm Apocalypse

X360: WTF!? We're waiting for Forza 4 and Gears of War 3

Result: Too early to tell. But.. I just might have a good idea. We're having the sequel of the GOTY 2008 (LBP), The sequel of both the GOTY contenders in 2009 (KZ3 and Uncharted 3), Thrown in with the sequel of another acclaimed game (Infamous 2), and the return of a new IP (Twisted Metal). Another motorstorm aswell along with Resistance. Forza 4 releasing to compete with GT5 and take over the ground attention till' GT6 arrives, that alone is a battle that won't be rewarded with GOTY. Gears 3 is going alone against everything. It all depends on that game for any GOTY awards at all. Quite the pressure...

All im saying is, share MGS4. They deserve it. Without the 360 fans, we PS3 fans would not be spoiled kids. We complete each other :'(. I don't know if this counts as a rant, but yes I went a tad off topic. I just had to share my mind, hoping that nobody sees it as an insult. Cheerioz.

i care a lot about exclusives coz they define the system & give it its identity & when a game is exclusive you will notice in most cases that it is the game which will maximize the potential of a certain console like in the PS3 case here.

so yeah exclusives will always be important to the console makers & gamers.

exclusives mean that you can warrent the purchase of a second (or in this generation even a third) console, I'm sure Forza 4 will get a few PS3 fans who waited years for GT5 to release to buy a 360 and I'm sure titles like Infamous 2 will make a few 360 owners buy a PS3, this is why price is also important, for second systems, you don't nessecarily want to pay a lot of cash for it
