Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Do folks STILL think Rock Band is a flop?

Absolutely not a flop -- anyone who thinks so at this point is being delusional. At the very least this game will get close to a million on the 360 (that is, if the legs its growing die suddenly and  unexpectedly) but is much more likely to go on and sell 1 million+ in its first iteration.

I can't wait to see how the Wii version does, and I'm interested to see if/how they'll incorporate the Wii remote.

Should do very well on the Wii as well. Maybe we can use cow bells on the Wii version!

Why play Ninja Gaiden when you could learn to use a sword yourself?

Why play Tekken when you could learn Karate and actually kick ass yourself?

Why play Gran Turismo when you could just drive in real life?

Why play Final Fantasy when you could just be homoerotic in real life?

i'm one of the ones who simply can't see rock band to be successfull--at $170.

but apparently it has sold well, and i'm genuinely surprised.

for a new IP it has indeed done well.

the Wii is an epidemic.

One could take this even further, and apply it more generally to someone like myself. I like hard, challenging games, particularly multiplayer ones, as facing real people (with experience and skill) is almost always harder than facing AI.

One could reasonably ask this question: if I want a real challenge, why do I play games so much? Why don't I get my ass back in school, finish my once promising life at an Ivy League University, and get a serious and demanding job in computer programming or in research? Now that is a challenge.

The answer is that I'm scared of real challenges, and non-threatening "challenges" such as those found in video games make me much less nervous. Losing in Guitar Hero is much less frustrating than years of laborious Guitar lessons, and losing in Tekken is a whole lot less painful than getting your ass kicked constantly for years until you're actually a capable fighter.

In short, games minimize the pain and worry that comes with actual challenge. This is true for all genres, and is one of the reasons we find them so enjoyable.

Definently not a flop, especially compared to a similarly priced, er, Steel Batallion. The gameplay justifies the price tag. Make sure you have some friends and this will be a good time.

Heck, I wrote up a "put RB on the Wii, dangit" thread a bit back. With what GH3 is selling on the Wii (even with the mono sound bug) EA is missing out.

And apparently I'm a good singer, w00t.

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.

Given that every Rock Band buyer is likely to buy a lot of downloadable content they're probably making a lot of money for each sale. I have little doubt we'll see a Rock Band 2. Probably also a Wii release once Nintendo integrates downloadable content into the Wii Shop channel.

"Ho! Haha! Guard! Turn! Parry! Dodge! Spin! Ha! Thrust!" -- Daffy Duck

I have to admit, I misunderestimated Rock Band. I never really cared for Guitar Hero, and I figured this was pretty much the same.  And given how much more expensive it is than GH, I figured it would bomb.

Then I went to a party and ended up playing Rock Band until like 6am. Just based on that one experience it's one of my top 10 GsOTY.

I may end up buying it if there are enough new songs I like as DLC.  This game already has good legs from the positive word of mouth, and that will only continue, well over 1 million would no longer surprise me.

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick
