I still think it's a neat little piece of hardware although mine's been gone for about 2 weeks (repair) and I can't say I really miss it. It had become nothing more than a really convenient way to pick up a quick session of SSFIV without having to turn on a console, load a disc and wait for the game to boot up.
I will admit to still using the Street Pass and pedometer/Play Coin function up until I sent it for repairs though.
Like all dedicated gaming devices, the 3DS is only as good as the games you play on it. And while technically one can play all their favorite DS games on their $250 3DS to feel as though they're getting "good use" out it; you really don't need a 3DS for that.
3DS games and 3D content are the only real distinguishing features of the handheld, neither of which is currently available in abundance.
I'm not one to buy crappy games or games I wouldn't have bought normally were it not for the lack of better content to buy, or to use a device excessively simply because I paid a chunk of change for one. So until some of those announced titles I wanted are released (RE: Mercenaries next), the 3DS is kind of limited in value to me personally.
As for the NGP; there isn't a comprehensive list of what functions the device covers, so it's pretty pointless to make blind assessments in that respect. "If the 3DS is basically an enhanced DS with 3D, then the NGP is just an updated PSP" statements are pretty childish.
Presumably it will do all a smart phone will, with more processing power and memory tailored for game use, minus the ability to make phone calls on a cellular network, which is not, nor never was the intended purpose of the device.
Beyond that, and some of the most if not the most impressive portable games to date, I am expecting to see some interesting applications of the hardware itself in the form of augmented reality games/functions (mapping, live navigation, etc.) social networking apps, and some heavy duty media functions.
As a portable device, the high res OLED display itself is what may make me favor the device for portable media functions alone.
I already know about the initial release games and future releases, so about the only thing that could kill the device in my mind would be the price. If it's $400, I have to say unless the 3G data plan is excellent and the built in web browser is better than the iPhone's, I won't be buying one initially.
At $250 for the base model, it's a given purchase even if I use it for nothing but NGP specific games.
This sounds oddly familar

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.
Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi
3DS is gonna sell more, and Project Cafe is probably gonna steal all its thunder if it has touchscreen.

I don't think there has been a post this full of truth in a very long time

I just think his statement is stupid and uncalled for. I don't agree and, since this news is posted on a forum where I am able to make posts, it is pretty natural for me to express my opinion on it. That is rather the point, I believe.
If you said that pigs fly, I would again express my opinion that your statement is stupid or, if I were in a nice mood, inquire why you made such a suggestion, :P.
Also, people consider it a stupid tactic because Sony has failed every time they became arrogant. Nintendo, on the other hand, needed no trash talk whatsoever to trash the competition over the last generation. Therefore, there's nothing wrong with saying that they should avoid wasting time criticizing the competition when it doesn't do them any good.

I've said this before also. Depends on what Project Cafe is exactly, but from the rumours it can really put a dent in the home handheld market.
| o_O.Q said: lol somehow when nintendo disses games for phones people seem to get deaf... the fact of the matter is that all companies try to push the idea that their product is better or more unique or original or whatever than other products out there... its called marketing |
Not true, although the wild spinning of whatever anybody says never helps. For example, Iwata talks about 'content is king' in smartphone games (and in games in general), and cites Angry Birds as an example of a smartphone game done right.
Then follows hundreds of stories where it's suggested that Iwata is dismissing all smartphone games, including Angry Birds, as throwaway nonsense, and then you get anti-Nintendo types heralding Angry Birds as their champion in defeating Nintendo, thus entirely missing the point of what Iwata said in the first place...
Thus proving that it's never what you say but how people report on what you say that matters, and I imagine (or rather I hope) that in this instance with Sony, what they actually said was probably slightly more tame than the initial story suggested, but then tame doesn't get hits...
