Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why did Wii game sales explode????

Weeks ago, people were talking about how the Wii doesn't sale nearly as much software as the 360. they said that wii owners don't by games and that will lower the sales of the wii. but lately this fall and the holiday, the Wii has beaten the 360 worldwide in gamesales. (hardware sales are a differenrt story and we already know about that!) your thoughts??

Damn things have changed since 2009 began. Here are my new visions for the end of the generation.

Wii: 135 mil

Ps3: 85 mil

360: 60 mil

There may be an easy answer to this: if you're fighting 1st-gen games vs. 2nd, the 2nd-gen games will generally in, but 2nd vs. 3rd is a tougher call. The Wii's 2nd-gen games just came out the gate this fall, starting with MP3, whereas 360's 2nd-gen wave started with Gears of War, competing against Nintendo and Sony's launch games.

The other issue is install base.

Really, there are several possible explanations.

1 mellisa wtf you talking about i didnt get anything ther honestly
2. the wii has good software sales but only games that are 1 party third party games dont sell as well thats were the 360 is good at

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!

bet with *no one yet* that the combined first week of Monster Hunter 3 in america and europe will be 600k or more! winner changes looser sig and avatar for two months!

melissa is right its a whole new breed of games out now, maybe the holiday season is also the reason for the increase, the wii started to slowly increase in weekly sales back in Nov and it hit its height of 1.45 mill in the week leading up to christmas, the games have prolly followed this trend. There doesnt seem to be at all the same demand for the other systems and so their game sales are obviously staying around the same.

What are trying to say Melissa? 1st gen and 2nd gen games? WTF? MP3 isn't a 2nd gen game. It's the 7th videogaming Generation!

The 360 won't bomb, the Ps3 won't sell out past 100 million, the Wii will. Over all predictions, NINTENDO IS BACK IN FIRST BITCHES!

You people aren't getting it. MP3 is a second generation game on the Wii.

When a console is released, games that it starts out with are considered "First Generation X (ie; Wii) games" , as time goes on, the games move into the 2nd Gen phase, and then 3rd, and so on. The older games get titles like "Platnium hits" or whatever and sell cheaper. The process is noted most by developers becomming more and more familiar with a systems development tools. This is invariably why easy to develop for systems are cheaper, where as ones that are not cost more money and more time (which also cost more money).

shes talking about the difference betwene release titles and the games in the first year of the console in comparison to the usual increase in the quality of games throughout the seccond year/ season of the console (labeling each year as a generation of games on the console)

Koopatrooper, wtf are you talking about? Melissa made perfect sense. Microsoft has their second generation of games going against Nintendo and Sony launch games. The system has a year advantage so the games, with time, got better. Neither Nintendo nor Sony had the same opportunity.

Since the release of Metroid Prime 3, game sales have gotten much tighter (with a big note for Halo 3) and I expect that when the RPG games start coming out, Wii will start to open a lead on Microsoft with games sales worldwide.

Actually, it could really all start with Smash Bros. and Mario Kart.
