Forums - Gaming - The Slow, Strange Death Of The Demo

they should add demos into full games, like in the "Extras" section, that way the people who had slow internet and the people who prefer physical copies both with.

its a simple thing a couple of people did, but i don't why not many did it, instead they just have a voucher so you can download it, whats the effing point of that?

Well, the normal PC game market may be facing this.  However, you see stuff like OnLive, where you get to demo the full game in short clips. I also see a number of demos of games for the XBox 360, from smaller Indie games, to larger stuff.  Big production titles may end up doing away with this, but ways to try before you buy that are legal, will still be around.

But, this should be added also: There is a HUGE push to do pre-orders where people buy stuff sight unseen, so the videogame industry can do the equivalent of box office with movies.

Madden Demo, every year, is my new Madden game. :D

I remember the demo disc my friend's PS1 came with. It had Spyro1 on it, we played that demo sooo much :) - - - - - We played it like a normal game, it had no time limit and we didn't care that it was just a demo n_n

Demos are almost like free games, who wouldn't want that?

Me too!

That Spyro demo was amazing when I was a kid!

Nowadays I see the same thing with my little brother. He plays some demos more than a lot of full games.

They assume, if you wanted a demo, you'd just torrent the full version without DRM and demo it yourself.

You think you are joking, but in today's market with all sorts of super hyped up buckets of shit games out, this method probably works out the bestl. Especially when you actually buy the game afterwards, everyone wins except for the shit developers who need hype and pre-orders to make up the $100million the spent making shit.

Edit: I would totally b uy Frozen Synapse if I was able to try it out myself before buying it....

I may be joking but there's some truth to it.

We often see a lot of incomplete games released nowadays. Why? They can patch it afterward. That shit was unacceptable before. Do you think they have time to create a demo when their main game isn't complete?

They also know that their shitty DRM cannot stop piracy. Those that __really__ wanted to demo first and buy later, have the only option to pirate first to demo then buy it later if it's good.

And finally the 3rd option, which you specified. With hype and videos, you can't often tell if it's a good game until you played it. Which would be too late since you've already bought it.

Another option would be to allow people to fully refund their games even after they have been opened. In the exact case of opton three.

I bet you that would be the #1 sharpest decrease in piracy of all time if it actually got around to happening. It would work infinitely better than any DRM (then again since DRM works 0 percent of the time any increase would be infinite...).
